I have to say I am seriously impressed with these cans. They have the mids and treble clarity and resolution of the HD600's but with a sub-woofer added. Clear, detailed, fun and the bass...oh momma, the bass! Someone posted " these are like being in the front row at a small venue". I would go a step further...these sound like you are on stage with the performers. If fact, these are the only hp's I have listened to that make it sound like the music is coming FROM you. People say these have a small sound stage but I think they are better described as intimate. These are REALLY good headphones!
Anyone want to buy a bunch of used headphones? I no longer need about half of my collection. :)

ibbilboGreat review. How would you compare the soundstage of these to the HD 600's? How much smaller is the soundstage if you have to quantify it with a rough #?

TechCityTo my ears the sound stage is pretty close in perceived room size between the HD600's and the X00's with a slight edge to the Fostex. The difference is that with the HD600's the room sounds like it is filled with hard reflective surfaces where the X00's room sounds like it has sound dampening material applied to the walls.
Most people highlight the bass quality of these hp's but I would submit that where they really shine is in detail retrieval. These X00's are detail monsters. IMO better than the Senn's

ibbilboThanks for the detailed reply. That actually makes sense the way you describe the differences. I think this is enough information for me to make the jump and get in on these headphones. From everything I have read about them they sound like the headphone I am looking for to replace my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro's and possibly even my AKG K7XX's but that remains to be seen, I really love the sound signature and expansiveness of the soundstage that the K7XX's have for gaming/movies/tv. ibbilboI agree with your assessment that the TH-X00 provide an "intimate" but wide soundstage. The bass is the fantastic: deep,powerful, and textured, but it doesn't muddy up the mid-range.
You need to give these cans a good 100 hours before they really open up. Out of the box they sounded somewhat muddy and lacking in highs: Also, balance was shifted to the left. Break-in has solved those problems. I also find them comfortable while wearing eyeglasses, a first for me. I have a box of other headphones that I can now discard.
This is the first time I've really enjoyed listening thru headphones; I only used them in the past to avoid annoying others, rather than cranking up my loudspeaker system!
Ignore my previous post: I am keeping these babies!! Run-in is mandatory!

LeQwasdLeQwasd: I considered the possibility that my meager brain compensated for the imbalance, so I asked two other household members to double-check: they also report that the balance problem is resolved. Problem is, they now also want TH-X00s for their own use!! I don't have that kind of money!!

gkrrYour comment on burn in is spot on. Out of the box the bass was muddy and kind of overwhelming while the treble was at times bordering on too aggressive. I too have about 100 or so hours on them and they have smoothed out beautifully. Probably the biggest change from burn in that I have experienced in any headphone. Once settled in, these are some of the best balanced headphones I own!

ibbilboI'll have to concur with that statement on burn-in. I didn't actually believe it was a thing, and I've noticed little change in the bass, but I've definitely noticed a softening in the sibilance of highs that took them from "piercing" to "pleasant".

ibbilboThere are many burn-in "deniers" out there, probably because it so subjective and difficult to quantify. The TH-X00s took longer than most transducers to run-in. Burn-in happens with capacitors, wire, vacuum tubes etc., and pretty much every other aspect of audio. Some DAC chips can take 500 hours to finally settle in. Thankfully, most changes occur within the first 50 hours.
