2 headphones with totally different characters. 1 for gaming and movies, the other for music.
Even though it only just arrived today (Singapore) and I could only try it for a while, it sounds great (in my opinion) even before breaking in, and matches very well with the Grace Design/ MD dac. I am a happy camper.

detroixThe Grace is just awesome. No doubt about that.
Here is what I feel the difference are between the 2. (They are very different)
I use the K7XX for gaming and watching movies/videos because of the open back and the larger sound stage (also dialog sounds clearer)
I use the Fostex for pure music listening because of its superior bass and closed back.
So they do compliment each other, just get 2 nice stands and have them side by side hahaha

hunkichunkiI agree with these comments. I picked up both and while I keep going to the Fostex for their overall comfort and bass, I concur that I find the Foster's sound stage smaller than the AKGs. The AKGs certainly have more airiness to them and a wide stage, but they are so BIG and not really as comfortable due to their size. I need to put more time in with the AKGs at this point, but you mimic my feelings about that two. Good to have both for different purposes.

hunkichunkithanks for the info. The Grace is comparable to amp/dac at the $1000 price range?
Looks like you and martinm0 just gave me good reasons to break my wallet.

detroixYou are most welcome. I am not sure if it is comparable to the products in the 1K range. But it works superbly well for my needs =)

hunkichunkiI haven't had the chance to listen to the Grace M9XX yet myself, but I have also heard several comments that it pairs very well with the TH-X00. Supposedly the design of the amp in the M9XX is a good match for getting tight, fast bass response out of the TH-X00 because it can deliver a lot of current via very low impedance from what I understand. I'm super tempted to run some eBay auctions to fund a Grace M9XX purchase now. :)
From actual experience, though, I can say that I notice a pretty huge difference in the bass response with the TH-X00 when listening through my Asgard 2 versus my Centrance DACPort Slim, or via my Macbook Pro's headphone jack. Via the Asgard 2, the TH-X00s sound very well balanced like a good set of full range speakers coupled with a nice subwoofer. The bass is very deep and well controlled without affecting the midrange and highs. The bass is just beautifully non-directional and surround-like, anchoring the music, but not boomy or overpowering at all. With the Centrance, it's hard to describe, but the bass definitely seems less "enveloping" and detailed, and like it's just a bit slower with less punch, almost as if it's a separate track that's ever so slightly out of sync, if that makes sense. If that were my only experience with the TH-X00, I would have thought they were good, but nothing special.
This is not to bag on the Centrance at all, just to give some context for the comparison...for example, I like the Centrance quite a bit when listening to my HiFiMAN HE-400s, which are much more focused on a smooth, beautiful midrange and airy imaging than on low frequency performance and impact. But it seems that to fully appreciate the incredible bass capabilities of the TH-X00, having the right amp makes a world of difference.

detroixIt's going to be different. Sound sigs are different, headphone type is different. These do still leak but not as much as open backs. Also the grace is vastly overpriced and not worth the money at all imo. Purely selling off the grace name. There are many other options that are better for the money.
