Odd that they would put a pocket clip on a trainer. Unless you need to be ready for some training action at a moment's notice.

bookworm13I would never buy this product so don't take this as a general defense of it, BUT...if it's intended as a training device for the real deal, you'd want it to function exactly the same, including how it deploys. It would be a real bummer to train on using a karambit only to accidentally drop it the first time you have to deploy it quickly under stress.

XymnslotGood point! I wasn't even thinking that they made a functional version, but of course they do.

bookworm13The karambit model that this mirrors has a notch to catch the side of your pocket and open as you pull it out. So the whole act of pulling it out of your pocket and gripping it is important, and without some practice you can easily cut yourself.

KabaInteresting - like the wave on an Emerson folder.
Yes, that would be a nice thing to practice with a trainer.

bookworm13 From a different angle, depending on you global location. The carry of a self defense knife is strictly prohibited. that being said use of a weapon of any type is often prohibited as well in those places. However to my point, one could use a trainer for joint manipulation and / or force multiplication / pressure point enhancement, verses a lethal force "go to" in field. The old closed knife idea just open. One can get a pretty solid response from a person with a blunted edge, and it shows a level of restraint. So you may want to be able to deploy a trainer at a moments notice:)

Jax1This. I very much like the idea of learning to use a karambit as a means of non-lethal defense/restraint. But watching karambit training and imagining any of those moves being performed with a sharp blade....it makes me shudder. I'm (obviously) not against the use of a knife when necessary, but karambit fighting is some nasty freaking business 😳

KavikThe beauty of trainers is that you simply replace a live blade with a trainer. the techniques are identical as with any art you wish to perfect speed and intent are the true key.

Jax1I get that :) I just mean I think it could be a useful thing in and of itself, in the right hands. Without the need to necessarily step up to a real blade. And with no questions of legality, being that there's no edge.
That said... I mean, I dunno, I don't do much looking at karambit pricing, but this does seem a little pricy for G10 and cheap stainless with no grinding or sharpening involved in the manufacturing

KavikYeah thats true, but you can still use the training karambit as a great means of non-lethal control. The amount of force it would take for most peoples hands to cause the skeltonized stainless steel liners to break or fail is more than most people have the ability to exert.

DarkTimberNo argument there, I was agreeing with that. Just saying about the price... It's still a bit up there considering there's no need for high quality steel and careful tempering and grinding and sharpening....it's half the cost in materials, a third the amount of skill and work needed to make it, but it still wasn't cheap
