Got mine today from that other place that I ordered from (not sure if I can say here from where) and did a quick listening test with AKG 7xx. Drives them easily at about eleven o'clock on the volume. More than that and it's getting loud for my taste. Could only compare the DAC-X6 with FiiO A3 (using it on my phone) and FiiO E10K and to be honest, worth the cheaper price in comparison with the E10K. Does wonderful job with the sound, works without any issues and is well built. Just plug and play with the default windows drivers (connected through usb).

viper01Can't confirm as I don't have speakers to test it out, but from this review in Russian he says that the volume controller only controls the headphone output. Also both the headphone and RCA outputs work at the same time:

Hope it helps.

koranceNo issues with channel separation. Left and right still clearly separated even on max volume. Sound imaging depends on the source and sound stage depends on the listening device, so not sure how really answer to that. But playing Battlefield 4 and CS:S with AKG 7XX is a pleasure. Can tell the directions of the shots and footsteps without any issues. And with music, even well mixed EMD is fun to listen to. For example Gianni Kosta - Tom's Diner

Sound stage and imaging is clear and sounds really good on that one with AKG 7xx.

pukimanI returned the SMSL SD-793II to AMAZON.com because the 793II just didn't have the Power to Drive My AKG K7XX's !!!
BUT, you have to understand I like my LOUDNESS IN THE "EAR-BLEEDING" RANGE !!! AND just a question if I'm not out of LINE !!! I'm getting the DAC- X6 on MASSDROP even through I've been offered a Price lower !!! I thought the purpose of MASSDROP was to Form Groups to get good prices for all of the Buyers and not just for a GREAT PRICE for just a FEW ???

viper01I would expect that an RCA output is probably a DAC output (pre-amp output/pre-out), not an amp output. As such it would be very normal for the volume knob not to affect the pre-out. This is also how the O2/ODAC behaves as well as most receiver units for example.
Conceptually what's going on here is that it's literally a way to tap the output that would have been fed to the amp stage. You don't make the sound quieter by attenuating a signal BEFORE feeding it to the amp, you reduce the gain of the amp. So not reducing volume on the pre-out is working as expected here.
