My girlfriend and I are thinking about getting a turntable and speakers. Would this make an adequate amplifier for a turntable speaker setup? If so, what do I need to keep in mind as far as turntable and speaker specs are concerned?

BubbaHotpe68MM = Moving Magnet. MC = Moving Coil. You can read the Wikepedia entry for "Magnetic cartridge" for more details. Most entry-level turntables will come with a MM cartridge. For speakers, Klipsch R-51M's have a sensitivity of 93 dB @ 2.83V / 1m, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms.

BubbaHotpe68As others have said, you will need very efficient speakers which usually means horns. Look for a pair of Klipsch heresies on Craigslist. You should buy the speakers and let the girlfriend buy the turntable. Those speakers will be good for a lifetime but you don't want to be stuck with a cheap improperly maintained turntable.
