I'm an Ebay seller, so I am painfully aware of how much shipping costs. Everyone wants free or cheap shipping because of Amazon, but it's not realistic for us small sellers to get the same shipping rate as a retail juggernaut that ships 3.3 million packages A DAY. Yes, 3.3 million every single day. I just shipped a winter coat UPS domestically within the USA and it cost me $18.
International shipping is even worse. If you don't believe this, get a quote at the UPS/USPS/FedEx/etc shipping websites from New York City to your address in your country for a package that is about 6 x 14 x 14 inches, weighing 5 pounds. If you can in fact find a reputable shipping service that is substantially less, Massdrop has asked you to let them know.
I know someone that did a kickstarter for a board game and they made a poor assumption about the costs of international shipping. They honored all orders, but after quitting their real jobs and doing a ton of work, they actually made a loss on every single customer outside the USA.
