I have had the fenix 3 for two years now. Good solid watch. Accurate gps. It needs an external chest strap for hr. But then you get cadence.
Sorry you had a bad experience, but I could say the same for polar.

As a Garmin watch owner (Forerunner, not Fenix), I can't advise buying any of their products. Don't get me wrong, hardware is awesome. Reliable, long lasting battery, rugged and overall well engineered. Software on the other part is the disappointing element. Basically the moment new model in same line of watches comes out you can forget about software update for yours. In my case this was some 6 months after purchasing.
Support was also atrocious. My watch at some point freaked out and created activity file which caused the whole watch to constantly keep crashing and rebooting. I managed to collect the data, extracted the file, prepared a detailed bug report and sent it to Garmin to which they replied "just do a factory reset".
Take what you will from my experience, but these watches cost as much as any other smart watch with poor software and dreadful manufacturer support. I am not, however, an isolated case. Internet is filled with stories of ruined marathon runs where Garmin just decided to not work. I guess they were unable to do factory reset during the run.
Oh, also, you can forget about these watches being integrated with anything else. At some point I wanted to integrate tool I made with their API and gave up because they lock access to their Garmin Connect. Developers have to pay 5000$ fee to access API and documentation. Something that every other company gives away from free.

I just got the HR refurb from ‘zon... it’s pretty good with 2 days of use so far. I bought it for backpacking more so than for training. It sure is very bulky but doesn’t weigh much and not very noticeable. My unit was actually the sapphire version which I didn’t expect to get but it’s nice to know and 1 yr warranty. Looks brand new to me and it costed me a lot less @ 239. I had Apple Watch 1. So the software seems a bit archaic on F3HR.

StrikefvSo did compass, knives, tents, shoes and many other things. I am happy they managed to survive and come back home, but having to rely on Garmin watch to operate reliably is a scary thing for me.

It isn't clear from the description, but this does not appear to have HR monitoring built in. A Bluetooth or ANT+ HR monitor will need to be paired with it for HR data and VO2 max capabilities. If you want built in HR monitoring, you will need to pay another $200+ for the "Fenix 3 HR" or "Fenix 5X".

DeepColdWaterIn the description under "running and cycling features" it lists Heart rate monitor
Would love clarification on this as that is the deciding factor for me

typ44qIt supports an external heart rate monitor. It does not include the heart rate monitor. The ones that include HR in the watch either have HR in the name, or include in the features, Elevate wrist heart rate technology measures heart rate at the wrist.
More info at https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/160512
From what I've been advised, the Elevate isn't as accurate as the external monitor, in any case.

lukinidNot a big deal. Just use Borderlinx. I've been saying this to all the members on these forums who keep complaining about no int'l shipping. I've been using Borderlinx for a decade now. And I've been buying stuff off Massdrop for a year now. I live in Bombay.
The only problem is with those lovely kitchen knives which Massdrop sometimes offers. Borderlinx has lots of hangups about shipping knives.
