I'm thinking that in college my future roommate would prefer I get browns or one of the linear switches. Is it really a big deal if i got greens or blues?

Brinks246Browns and linear should be almost the same in sound. IMO you should get linear over browns. Between Greens and Blues is spring weight, nothing else.

mzipfI think that a clicky switch might be a bit much for a roommate. Maybe I should O rings too. I have always wanted to try a heavier switch like the cherry clear or gateron green but have never gotten around to it.

Brinks246O-rings will not quiet blues or greens. It only helps with bottoming out which is a small part of the over all noise of clicky switches.

mzipfI meant getting o rings in addition to quieter switches. Are the switch mounted pads better than o rings or would I be better to just not bottom out the keys when typing

Brinks246Honestly, most of the noise from mechanical keyboards comes from bottoming out the keys (e.g. my housemate's Corsair K70 with Cherry MX Reds is arguably louder than my IBM Model M). O-rings can help immensely with this problem. Heavier spring weights also tend to make it easier to avoid bottoming out the keys (Reds are 45g...hence he bottoms out every keystroke...although in general he is a very loud person...so perhaps it is just his typing style). I have some Halo Clears, which are relatively quiet, since the heavy weight allows me to easily avoid bottoming out most of my keystrokes. I am thinking about getting Gateron Greens or Blues, and the noise is pretty much last on my concern list.

arjunygThanks for your incite. Too bad there arent the equivalent of cherry mx clears on this drop. Where would I get heavier springs for gateron and cherry switches?

Brinks246Blues and Greens are loud as hell. I like my Cherry Blues a lot and love typing on them, however, my 3 room mates have all stated that they always know when I am on my computer since they are so loud. Our rooms are pretty far apart but even through my closed doors and their closed doors, they can hear me. So not everyone will like it. 2 of my room mates don't like them and the other one doesn't mind too much.

ThePWRofYogAt least mechanical keyboards are not as loud as type writers.
