I happen to have also discovered that these Gateron housings take fabric dye very nicely! I'm building a keyboard using the Danger Zone drop from a couple months ago. The set has a blue/blue-grey primary color theme, so I made a blue anodized switch plate for it. You can see it in detail (with the Cherry stabilizers installed).

Here it is compared to a full size Apple Extended Keyboard II. My layout is a 75% + 1 column to the right. Allows for standard key sizes to be used, with no short shift or short mods, with arrow keys, and has a total of 88 keys, one more than a TKL. I ordered the black plate for a typewriter style key cap set, to go with my PC in a 1939 Philco radio cabinet. The Danger Zone set is intended to match up with the custom Kerbal Space Program controller I'm building... Basically, It'll be a cockpit built into a desk.

So here's the big discovery... I didn't like the idea of the milky white switches between my beautiful blue plate, and my Danger Zone caps... so I started out by trying Sharpies on them... It was okay, but then I decided to run to the local Walmart and buy some cheap fabric dye... Juuuust to see if it would work... Left switch is obviously the un-dyed one. Right two are two colors of Sharpie marker. THe second from the left... That's the dye, and it is PERFECT!

Strung all the top housings onto a wire and dunked them in the dye for a few hours. The dye says to use boiling water, but I had major concerns that it might damage or warp the plastic. I ended up boiling a pot of water, and then mixing it 50/50 with cold water. Plastic seems to have survived the dunk.

This is the final result. I don't think i need to say anything further... The picture is all the statement I need.
I just thought I'd share with the community that these caps take dye VERY nicely, so you can really truly customize your keyboards in even more detail than you might have before.
richfilesWoah! This project is coming along nicely. Those are looking pretty nice!
Although one thing to note is Gateron is moving from the frosted tops to a transparent top now. Not sure if they will make any more of the frosted ones.

YanboWuThat's a bummer. Those frosty caps are perfect for this... Maybe those with old caps will find a newfound value in their top housings. That's the nice part of this... You remove the top housing and just dye it. Bottom side of the keyboard is still milky white. In theory, one could migrate a dyed switch set to new switch bottoms.
We'll just have to see if the clear ones will even take dye, in the future.
And thanks for the compliments!
