Is the mortar made of porcelain? Aren't mortars usually made of granite or some other tough, heavy material? Is the porcelain durable enough to hold up to repeated heavy striking with a big wooden pestle?

Amazing! Works really well! Smaller than I thought it was gonna be, but can't complain. Oh super easy to clean to!

The suribachi (the thing everyone is calling a mortar) is on the smallish side, imo. I think the 7+ inch versions are much more common, useful, and easy to use. If you have an Asian market near you, I'd recommend checking it out first. The ginger graters are usually made out of tin and sell for just a couple of dollars (although they often do carry ceramic versions). Suribachi's are harder to find (unless you happen to have a Japanese market near you), but they're also usually not too expensive.

Been meaning to pick up a mortar and pestle for a while.. Didn't know I also needed a ceramic grater 'till just now lol
Seems like a decent deal. In for one for myself and one for a gift (weird that there was a limit of 2 in the order form? One sister is gonna be jealous of the other come Christmas time lol)

I have a ceramic plate grinder I use all the time for garlic and ginger. Very excited to have another, that comes with a mortar and pestle!

Stay near the edges of the inner circle, get a stiff-bristled brush to push the fiber out of the spikes. I just do more ginger than I need and throw away the stuff I brush out, as what gets stuck in the teeth is a lot of fiber and what falls to the side is just the good bits.

Put a piece of plastic wrap over it before grinding. When done, lift up and all of the ginger comes up with it
