Product Description
Perhaps best known for its 24-hour Airman tool watch, Glycine has been producing quality timepieces since 1914. This one, powered by the company’s own GL293 21-jewel automatic movement, wouldn't look out of place on a pilot’s wrist Read More

I have a large Glycine Watch collection....pre Invicta.....and the GL0071 is on sale now at Ashford for $399.00 until February 3rd 2020. The difference between the GL0071 and the GL0218 is that the 0071 has a see through case back...the Airplane image adds a nice touch to the watch and the GL0218 does not. Also the 0071 is a 21 Jewel GL293 Glycine refined ETA movement and the 0218 has a Sellita movement. The hands on the 0071 has silver luminous hands and the 0218 has silver luminous and black tipped hands towards the end of the hands. Hope this information helps for someone thinking about what is the difference between both watches if they want to make a purchase while they are on sale now....because really they both look....almost the same.

Gretchen-number5I was trying for a long time to find or read an article regarding the differences between these two models. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You may be right about the movement but I think that both of them share the same see through caseback. It's not only the gl0071 that has open caseback.

So all the same, will someone explain the difference between GL0218 and GL0071 (holes I noticed)? My psychiatrist is already alarmed.

I have both models (Purist and GMT). Both keep great time and look great! No problems with hand alignment. See included Pics. Both on black BluShark NATO's.

Tarzan say: Jane, why man buy same both watch? Jane say: Well Tarzan, one watch has an extra little hand. Tarzan say: What extra little hand do? Jane say: Same as the others Tarzan, just someplace else. Tarzan say: Jane, tell Tarzan truthfully--does anybody really know what time it is? Does anyone really care--about time?

Glycine makes so many damn watches I have a hard time keeping them all straight, and especially figuring out the differences between similar models. A site that really helps is GNOME--not the best for price, but one of very the best for facts.

I purchased the GL071 back in March 2018 having fallen absolutely in love with the aesthetics but QC has been an issue with the model I received. From the get go, the watch arrived with the GMT hand permanently 1 hour behind the actual time, though I learnt to live with the defect, as of 29th June 2019, roughly 1.5 years of ownership, the movement has unfortuantely stopped working completely. Disappointment would be an understatement but I can only hope others have better luck with the QC lottery.

The arguments for and against the Purist and GMT versions will be different according to whether the focus is on design, including historical aspects, or functionality. The original Purist design can track two-time zones whereas the GMT versions can track three so the choice here depends on on the weight given to original design v funcionality To understand the unique position of the DC4, one facet of the mechanics of the Purist and the GMT models is important. The Purist obtains its 24-hour rotation of the hour hand by attaching it to the GMT stem of the GMT movement and simply disabling to the conventhand part of the GMT movement. However, this ability to track three time zones created an interesting situation when reading the time at the first (local or home) time zone, since the hour hand now rotates twice every 24 hours but the dial remains the original 24-hour version. This means that it is necessary to tell the time at the first time zone by remembering what the positon of the hour and minute hands on the Airman would represent on a non-Glycine watch. From the point of view of conserving the original appearance of the dial this is not a negative factor but it does make it more difficult to tell the time depending on ability to adapt or readapt if more than one watch is owned. This leads to the final point that there is some support for the point of view that the DC4 might be the best of the many Airman options since it is easy to tell the first zone time and it retains the ability to track a third zone.
