"completely incompatible with existing keysets because it has a non standard bottom row, and because pgup, pgdown etc belong to a different row" found here: https://www.massdrop.com/talk/2889/designing-the-gmk-uniqey-c-70-custom-keyboard-a-true-community-custom
Can someone explain this any further to me? Does this mean some keycaps would look "funny" because they do not fit the contoured Cherry profile?
PartyschaumThat's not true, at all, there are a handful of GMK sets that already support this layout. Just check Yanbo's comment on the top of this discussion page regarding keyset compatibility.

Partyschaumi'm not an expert on this but i think he's referring to keycap size. take a look at this pic standard size keycaps. also take note of the levels mentioned R1,R2...the bottom row should be all 1.25 and the PgUp should be R4 and PgDn R3.

part of me does agree aksWillis GMK is known for it's high quality keycap set so one could argue that replacing them would not be necessary..having said that if this was the case for every board there would be no need to sell third party keycap set.. uhhh this is the first GMK keyboard i would ever consider buying so..i do have to admit i'm a newbie. still stuck on PBT keycaps that said Ducky and Leopold are now offering more pbt coulers then ever so i'm ok with PBT caps.. if i would buy this board i would only replace the spacebar. my only concern is the custom programming software /firmware i prefer a community based option like TMK or QMK.

PartyschaumAnd yes, now I have to join the drop. I will hate myself for this...
TuxKeyJust wanted to point out that there is no common standard to keycap row numbering. For example, GMK sets go from R1 top row to R4 bottom row (but same profiles as your picture). For example:

And another twist; some keycap sets use the ENTER row's profile for the very bottom row:

dvorcolgod lord what a mess how is someone supposed to get a handle on it. one would think with such a niche product with such a small turnaround one could just fo a standard what ever that may be. thx for the clarification ev if it just completely complicates things hahah. Well I suppose it makes life more interestin. In the end it means that set compatible is limited at best. Going to kbdfans and grabbing a set would be out of the question I now I now that's blasphemy hahaha but I do love me sum pbt oeps more blasphemy
TuxKeyRow numbering is generally manufacturer-specific. Deskthority has a good overview here, although their list of manufactures is not comprehensive: https://deskthority.net/wiki/Keyboard_profile

dvorcolthx for sharing .. you would have thought that as a frequent deksthority visitor and member i would have seen this wiki oopss..well bin too busy bla, bla, bla excuses,excuses..like i said thx.. wanted to gauge your opinion if possible. i'm on a mission to get my girl on a mechanical keyboard instead of that dreadful lenovo thinkpad keyboard. getting here a big screen did help but the keyboard i had that i didn't use was a FC660M with mx-clears i think cherry profile keycaps. standard set i bought from the seller that fit the FC660M 2yr ago. two of her complains i'm trying to address . 1) to heavy typing . that was easy i ordered the "Ducky MIYA Pro Sakura" nice pink and with mx-browns so that could help out. although looking back perhaps mx-reds would have bin better????? 2) i type faster on the thinkpad build in keyboard.. i asked around and one guy told me.. this is probably a combination of problems. keycap and switch travel distance and of course switch weight. now the "Ducky MIYA Pro Sakura" has nice pink keycaps pbt and looks good. i was thinking what keycap set would lessen the gaps between the keys ? and be flat like a chicklet keyboard?? i thought DSA profile ?? someone suggested XDA as far as i can tell googling around reading, watching pics the XDA sets are a bit higher and sets are hard to get.. Anny ideas on how i can tackle my issues ?? i think mx-browns will do nicely do i have to admit the one switch that i haven't tried is the mx-red silent. perhaps a high actuation silent light switch with DSA profile keycap would be the best option??? Thanks for you input appreciate it.
TuxKeyI think you’ve figured it out: XDA (if you can find it) with Cherry red (or equivalent). Alternatively, Cherry brown (or equivalent) would be good too. Linear vs tactile is a personal preference.
TuxKeyDSA would be the next best keycap. Also uniform profile, but slightly more dished with slightly smaller surface area (bigger gap between keys).

dvorcolthx appreciate it. will be on the lookout for a nice pin/purple XDA set ;-) agreed on the tactile vs Linear subject...just watched the latest episode of TopClack where they mentioned the new Blue Zilent switches..sounds good i never understood the Zeal force thing but now they have a good explanation on their site.. https://zealpc.net/collections/group-buy-pre-orders/products/zilents next year i'm going to invest in soldering hardware.. and everything that's needed don't want to be depended on a group buy to offer the switch i want.. Input club made a nice post / recommendation for soldering iron's i like the compact Wiysond TS100 nice compact and good to get started according to reviews on youtube.. will just grab a stand from allie express in fact also iron from there.. will just need to be car full who i buy from.. https://input.club/recommended-soldering-products/
thx again
