This looks like it would be quite nice for hammock camping or using with a top quilt. I already have a Blackrock down beanie and an extra hood off my Feathered Friends Volante jacket that I use for similar purposes.

OldTrailDogHow well does the volante hood work for hammocking? Do you wear the Blackrock hat underneath the hood, or just use the hood solo? Do you feel you have a good draftvseal with your quilt & volante hood? I am considering the FF Volante jacket & will begin Seattle over Thanksgiving to try it on... the idea of being able to apply $$ I would be spending on a hood towards a jacket purpose is VERY appealing :-) thanks in advance!

CardamomteaI think the hood works very well and is unquestionably warmer than my Blackrock beanie. It has more down in it and wraps cozily around my neck where the Blackrock doesn't. Albeit, my Blackrock beanie is an outstanding hat that I take backpacking during the summer. Got to keep that head warm!
Frankly, although I owned a very warm REI down parka decades ago, I never was much of a down coat person. I always layered up with umpteen layers, including down/synthetic vests, fleece, merino wool, down/synthetic hoodies, and an outer shell. A couple of years ago I decided that I wanted a good down jacket for the brutal cold days of deep winter. I purchased off ebay a Rab, Western Mountaineer, and the FF coats over a space of time. The FF was the one I decided to keep based on warmth and construction. The Rab was nice and second place, and I will be selling it this winter. I was actually disappointed in the WM because I own/owned three of their sleeping bags and they are fantastic.
I fact, and to address your TQ question, I prefer to use a sleeping bag as a TQ. The advantages in versatility and warmth outweigh the small weight penalty. The majority of the time I drape the sleeping bag over me, like a TQ. But, unless it is just too cold, I like having my head out and breathing fresh air and that is where wearing some sort of hat during the night shines.

OldTrailDogI picked up a blackrock down beanie on the last drop. Once the package was opened, SWMBO decided she loved it. I’m hoping I can keep this one.
