How close to max volume is 96.5? I assume you were hearing music in the SE535 well before 96.5; yes? How'd they sound with the m920 before you got to 96.5? thanks.
99.5 is the max (remember, you can set an offset too). I actually didn't have any music playing, as I was just trying to see if there was any background noise.
I just plugged them in again and did some quick testing, and it works just fine, and sounds great. I have a bad habit of listening to music way too loud (I'm trying to kick it, but I've had the habit most of my life, and it's difficult). That said, I believe my SE 535's do have a bit of damage from excessive volume, as they distort a little bit. This is not the amp's fault obviously.
As far as volume goes, the 50's to 60's are pretty good, with the 80's being at around my limits (which are probably higher than yours).
My sonic impressions of Grace's gear in general is that it is very neutral, but not in a clinical way that gets fatiguing (keep in mind, I tend to use my Woo amp much more than I use the Grace's, but I always use the Grace's DAC section when using a digital source). It reminds me a bit of ProAc Studio 100 loud speakers (a friend of mine has two pairs), which are very widely used in studios. They are known for being extremely neutral, but in a not fatiguing way. I think the Grace does that by being just a TINY bit warm, and I mean tiny. For all intents and purposes, their gear is neutral. I've read many people say that it's one of their favorite implementations of ESS Sabre DAC chips, which can sometimes be harsh in the upper frequencies. Above all, I've been very satisfied with mine, both in performance and features. I'm not the best at really explaining sonic impressions, or I would do more (sorry!).
Thanks for the reply. Decisions...
