Got it yesterday and had the same (default to TOSLink issue), finally figured out that to listen to music via USB I need to set it to USB. LOL, and man ever since then you can't pry my headphones off my head.
Granted I don't have killer cans like most of the folks on here, but I do have what I consider some of the most underrated cans ever JBL Synchro 500s. B/c they added this P.O.S. onboard DSP gimmick they got heavily dismissed by the community. Fortunately, it has an on off option, and without it on these sound fantastic.
And once I got these plugged into the M9XX, their entire character changed for me. Music became significantly more detailed and distinct, base and lower registers which I've always enjoyed on the 500s sounded better than ever--very clear, full, and moving. Playing music by Julia Kent is an absolute dream.
I, of course, had to try out some DSD files too, and I couldn't be more impressed. The only opportunity I'd ever had to listen to DSD was via downsampling on my PC (thus defeating the whole purpose). Now what I'm enjoying thanks to my M9xx is a complete reintroduction to my entire music library. It sounds like I purchased all new hi-fi copies of everything.
Also for those looking for some DSD files to try out, I found a set of 8 free tracks on Native DSD (https://members.nativedsd.com/albums/just-listen-1-compilation). Once you create an account, you can download them for free in various formats. I do NOT work for or have a referral code or in any other way am affiliated with Native, I just needed to try out the bleeding edge of my equipment's capabilities.
For a player, I used foobar2000, and couldn't be happier.
Anyway, thanks, Massdrop--this one is a real winner and makes ANYTHING I plug into it sound better. At some point, I'll move from my mid-fi cans to hi-fi, and then I bet I'll have the same situation where I get to explore my collection all over again as though it was brand new!
