My m9XX arrived a couple of days ago. I'm using my iPhone 6s, Yamaha HS8 active monitors and streaming Tidal Hifi (CD quality) files. As others have stated, the clarity, detail, and soundstage provided by the m9XX is simply astonishing. I spent the night listening to Roger Waters and felt the same impact of the music as when I heard Roger in several concerts.
Using this setup, the filters are very distinct. I find F4 to be the most transparent, with the deepest soundstage and lots of air.
My second choice would be F2, which gives a slightly more contained soundstage, almost as if you were listening in a more intimate club, yet sounding very detailed and with a well placed soundstage. You sense that you're sitting a little closer to a slightly less deep stage, with a little more acoustic damping on the walls of the concert venue, However, the sound and realism does not sound veiled in the tiniest bit.
F1 and F3 are a little less lively. I probably wouldn't use these settings unless the tracks really need to control the treble, cymbals, etc.
These are initial listening impressions using monitors. I'll be able to report back on headphone performance when the TH-x00 arrives. Also, I'm looking forward to building up a hi-res music library. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I'm very happy with the m9XX. Is it 100% or 1000% better? That's a personal decision only you can make. For me, it made my music come to life. For me, this is worth the money.
