is this DAC/amp a good fit for sibilant headphones? can it tame my audio technica w1000z? I am using a Aune T1 with Gustard H10 which work great with my LCD2, Z7 and even HE-400 though slightly sibilant. But female vocals on the w1000z is unbearably ear piercing using the same setup. String instruments are sublime though and this is the most open sounding closed hp I've ever listened to.

vpfishThe m9xx is quite neutral- you may want to consider a tube amp as tuning is relatively easy by using different models/manufactures/production dates of tubes...

Dr4BobThanks for your input. I've always read that tube amps are better with high impedance headphones. The w1000z is 43 ohms, 101 dB/mW, so fairly sensitive, but I think solid state amps will continue to part sibilance to it. should I try a hybrid like the Aune T1? I suppose I could just test it by connecting the w1000z directly to it without Gustard H10.

vpfishI do not have a hybrid amp to comment on personally, but understand some hybrids are more sensitive to tube rolling than others. Tube amps are better at making voltage than current, generally speaking, thus the recs for their use with higher impedance headphones. There are tube amps that drive low impedance cans, though. I have an RSA Raptor which drives Fostex and Denon cans easily. Maple Tree Audio out of Canada is a small builder of tube amps and has a huge reputation for synergy with Grado cans and I would expect other low ohm headphones. I would recommend going through the Head-fi.org forums to research your questions. There are many impressions and reviews on equipment and synergy of amp-phone combinations to wade through, but it is well worth the time to make an informed decision- caveat emptor.

Dr4BobThanks again for the insight. I lowered the gain on Gustard H10 (from +6 back to default) and the sibilance went away completely. I could hardly believe it! w1000z are now my favorite headphones in my modest collection. I love the wide sound stage, superb separation, just the right amount of bass, and female vocals is heavenly.
