While I have had my m9xx for a while now, I only just now got a worthy set of cans to pair with it. My LCD-2's arrived in the mail today; I was going to get the Teak E-Mu, but for $200 more scored these (new and with warranty), and have ZERO regrets!
I have to say that even with my old lower end mid-range cans (some will argue lower than mid, JBL Synchro 500's--which got a terrible wrap due to this *awful* optional integrated DSP that could be disabled, and when disabled they sound great)... even with the lower mid-range the m9XX made things better on the JBLs and improved the clarity and overall listening experience.
But now that I have my LCD-2's... dear hell... it's indescribably beautiful. I'm listening to a copy of some Glenn Gould recordings of Bach in DSD64 format at the moment and... it's just so spectacular (my god it's full of stars), taking me to a noticeably different place.
I'm not even remotely qualified to give any substantive audio review, but I can tell you that even as a layman the diminishing returns I was concerned about with step-above audio equipment was unfounded. I can easily hear the difference, I can feel the difference, and I couldn't be happier.
Thank you so much for the m9XX, and with plenty (65 is lots loud enough for me on high power) of volume ceiling to go, I am back off to go delight myself with a library I'm rediscovering.
Anybody considering pairing the m9XX with LCD-2's... I can't recommend it enough and try the F4 setting on the m9XX... perfection!
