The SR80 was my first "good" HP. It was a piece of crap a dozen years ago when I bought and I see that Grado doesn't appear to have changed a thing since. What kind of HP company doesn't try to improve their products? It's not as if the design is perfect, or even adequate. The cups spin 360 degrees, so the wires get twisted, which probably contributed to the short that ultimately killed mine. The stiff vinyl headband is uncomfortable. The earpads are made of some foam that turns into black powder as it ages and leaves your ears coated. Oh, and the sound is shrill. In short: junk.

RudolfSchmidtI thought the sound was fine, but I agree with everything else. I owned a pair of these a few years back, and the cable ended up twisting up and dislodging itself from the cup. Maybe I should have taken better care of them, but I've bought headphones at a quarter of this price point that had protection against something like that from happening. It really is an awful design flaw, and it's amazing that the build hasn't improved at all.

JaspreThe thing is though these are also being made in the USA instead of a sweatshop. The quality might not be the best for the price, but you are also paying for some piece of mind knowing that you helped an American craftsman keep a job and provide for his family. That might not be worth anything to some people, but that's a thought that bleeds into every purchase I make.

If that poor American craftsman wants my money he'll have to create something worth exchanging it for. I don't operate on pity and buy inferior products just because I feel a surge of nationalism in my heart.

Not sure if a sweatshop, but in YouTube, I saw the real workers... it's only a tenth of a second FYI:

at 2:31. There's another documentary which shows 3 workers working at the same time.

zoomorphOf course not because you are a selfish child. You have no concept of anything outside of your sad, tiny bubble. The concept of anyone daring to not serve the spoiled, privileged, little king whatever he wants on a silver platter for free makes the little king very upset. You don't understand what it takes to actually craft something outside of those three McDoubles for the drivethrough window. You have never created anything with worth so you have no concept of worth.

On the contrary, it's likely you who has never created anything of worth if you think positively of giving/receiving pity based on "effort" vs. reward based on merit. Grow up, kid.

Seriously kid? I worked hard for my money so I'm not about to just give it away to support an inferior product simply because it's made by the guy living down the street. It's a tough world out there, if the American craftsman isn't willing to adapt to the times they'll eventually run out of business.

With all due respect, and I do not mean to take on a hostile tone, but do you have any idea how the real world operates? It's not "selfish" to refuse paying for subpar quality, it's just how markets operate. And it seems sad if a sweatshop can maintain better quality control compared to a craftsman in USA.
"You have no concept of anything outside of your sad, tiny bubble." Really? It was not necessary for you to attack zoomorph like that. Now settle down, and get off your high horse. Don't talk down to people when your own words can apply to yourself.

RuffRydasYou are right. Hopefully they go out of business so they can all get jobs at Walmart.

ZALHERAIt is sad that a sweatshop can maintain better quality because they do it either out of fear for their lives or they kill themselves because of their jobs. It's selfish because every purchase you make has an effect outside of you, you just can't comprehend it. But please, let me know how my own words apply to me. I'm super curious how that quote applies to me going out of my way to make sure other people can feed their kids.

zoomorphThere is no pity in understanding every dollar you spend has an impact on someone else's world. I know it makes it a lot easier to save your pennies when you don't have to think about being ethical, but some people just choose not to be trash.

RuffRydasI disagree with those saying the Grado SR80e is "an inferior product." The design of these headphones might look like something out of the 50s, but they sound awesome.

NYalexSo what you are saying is there should be no middle class or skilled labor jobs in the US. You think the only options there should be are to be a cashier at Walmart or to own Walmart. There are some things that aren't made in the USA and it makes me very sad. Computers are certain electronics just can't be done. That's a fact of life. And I can tell you all of my clothes are 100% made and sourced in the USA because I care enough about my country to make sure of that. Most of my clothes are from Flint & Tinder. A lot of my work clothing is from All American Clothing. My shoes are SAS and some of the ones I've gotten from this site. You are free to click on my profile and see them. "Native" Americans traveled here from Asia; everyone living in the US is an American. But you smoke, which is a defining factor of the proletariat, so I really shouldn't expect understanding of a larger picture from you.
