I've never been back packing before, but want to at least once this summer. I also have never been somewhere to try a pack on so I don't know what I'd find comfortable. I used granite gear packs when in the BWCA last summer so I know the brand a little. Would it be a safe bet to jump on this drop and order say the 70L? I'm 5'11" and weigh about 215 right now so I'm guessing the Regular is the size to get.

solBLACKYou should check out Granite gear's website to learn about fitting a pack so that you get the right size. Being 5'11" tall it is likely that you will find that a regular size would be the right one however, it is possible that if you have a short trunk relative to your height a short pack might fit. 70l seems like a large pack to me at this point however, since you have never backpacked before you may not have purchased the other equipment that you will need. That will impact the size of pack that you would want. For example, a synthetic fill sleeping bag will require more space than a down bag would. If you come to grips with what a reasonable amount of clothing (probably much less than most would think) to carry would be, that will save you space in your pack. Length of trip will impact how much food you will need to bring. 70l is probably the "safest" size (maybe) but you may soon find that a 60l would actually be enough and will help keep your load smaller and lighter. I'm not fanatical about it (ultra lightweight backpacking) but I can get a 9 day trip out of a 60l pack without much trouble.

solBLACKIf you've not done backpacking before, I'd recommend trying to borrow or rent equipment first. Ask friends and check in with local shops. You might not like backpacking and there's a lot of equipment (and money spent) needed to get out the door. But if you want to buy, it's probably best to go to a store and try out packs, as you might find one that feels just right for you. I think Massdrop generally works best for shoppers who know pretty well what they're getting; it's one thing to buy a stove or socks, another thing to buy clothing, shoes or a pack without trying it on. That said, Granite Gear packs are pretty adjustable: height and weight and torso length should be taken in consideration.
A 70l pack is a pretty large: if you are going for an overnighter or 2-3 day trip, you might be able to go much smaller (especially if you are going with a partner). I use my old 70l pack when I'm backpacking with my kids and taking all the family's gear. Now most serious backpackers are trying to shift to ultralight gear--quilts, tarps, cat can stoves--but even beginners might think about starting lighter/smaller than getting the biggest possible stuff.

JohnfromMOI have some equipment already. I've been slowly piecing together camping gear as I want to start getting outdoors more. I've always loved camping and hiking so I have no doubt I'll enjoy backpacking. I've been buying most things Ultra light, or close to, so I'm thinking that a 60L would be a smarter bet. I'm hoping to get out and do something solo this summer and get away for a weekend. Hopefully find a cool place to backup in northern Wisconsin.
