Fossil Wood & Sterling Silver

Writing with this Grifos Nero Muse fountain pen is like holding a piece of history in your hand. The barrel is hand-turned from an ancient wood known as “bog oak,” found in the swamps of eastern Europe and carbon-dated to be up to 5,460 years old—that's roughly 1,000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza! Gleaming against the matte black of the barrel, the cap and grip section are made of sterling silver and plated in ruthenium (also called “black gold”). An intricate guilloche pattern completes the executive aesthetic.

Note: At checkout, choose a stainless steel nib (base price) or an 18-karat white gold nib (+ $150) in extra-fine, fine, medium, or broad. You'll also have the option to add a matching rollerball pen (+ $160). For evidence of carbon dating on the barrel wood, you can view the document here

The History of Guilloche

The guilloche technique originated in the 18th century, and uses a manual diamond-cutting tool to engrave metals with intricate patterns. Over the years, the craft has been handed down from generation to generation using machines that are operated the same way they were three centuries ago. Rare among pen companies today, Grifos has an in-house guilloche machine that allows its experienced silversmiths to engrave on-site.
