Writing with this Grifos Nero Muse fountain pen is like holding a piece of history in your hand. The barrel is hand-turned from an ancient wood known as “bog oak,” found in the swamps of eastern Europe and carbon-dated to be up to 5,460 years old—that's roughly 1,000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza! I was glad that I took a chance and bought the pen!
The wood felt very good after I oiled it a little bit. It was a pleasant change from the usual acrylic/resin or metal pens.
The long metal grip with about a 9.8-10 mm diameter suited me. The metal grip was not slippery because it had cross-cut grooves lightly cut into it. It takes about 1 1/2 turns to uncap, which was perfect.
The cap band had the words Nero Muse Italy inscribed.etched(?) on the side where the clip faced and a framed pic of a 4 legged animal on the opposite side. The plain clip is not stiff.
The EF nib smoothed out after cleaning with plain water and about a minute's worth of writing. No issues skipping or hard starting. Wrote well using Diamine Sepia.
No quality issues. Looks elegant without being gaudy. A nice contrast to my other smooth resin pens.
Just hope the silver doesn't tarnish too much as the grooves on the cap will make it hard to clean, and that the bog wood won't peel off. The pen came with some certificate in cyrillic writing apparently verifying the age of the wood.
Overall, I am very happy with the pen.
VicMarHello, thank you so much for your nice review, glad you feel this our pen right for your hands. The silver of this pen is covered by a layer of rhutenium and this precious metal do not tarnish so no problem. Also the bog oak wood will not peel of, is stabilized from 5400 years long seasoning and as for the Egyptian pyramids (same age) is is pretty "still". Thank you so much again for your purchase and very best regards from Italy. Maurizio
Nice pen, but I could not get it to write. Was able to squeeze some ink out of the point, but it does not flow at all. Maybe a defective nib? Very disappointed.
Update: Found in the discussions someone with the same issue and manufacturer recommended soaking the nib in a water/alcohol mixture overnight to remove a possible dried ink clog (in a new pen?). Tried it and it works. Pen now writes.
snellers1Hello, gald you have fixed yourself this issue and yes is possible since often customers trying to start ink flow shake the pens in very hard way creating small air bubbles in the tiny ink capillary which should lead the ink to the nib. These air bubbles stop the ink flow. Washing the pen you have not dissolved the dry ink (as you guess is not possible in a new pen) but you have flushed away the air bubbles and then the ink start to flow in right way. No mistery ;-) Thank you for your purchase and best regards from Italy!

The pen is gorgeous, but the nib leaves a lot to be desired. I've got other nibs that write better and start better, and they came in pens that cost a lot less.
Hello, I'm back you you. Thank you for the pics, They can not help so much but I suggest to "speed up the clock" and if you contact me straight on the email giving us your address I will ship you immediately a new nib and feeder so you could change it yourself (I will give you information ho do this easy thing).
I remain at your disposal! Best regards from Italy

This became my daily driver after I had issues with my Lamy Dialog 3 (my fault). This pen writes beautifully, feels great in hand, and the wood is very strong. I've had a few accidents, and as far as I can tell the wood remains unblemished.
The pen is wonderful, everything I’d hoped it to be. Smooth writer, excellent fit and finish. I’d recommend Griffos anytime.
My complaint? The horse shit Fed Ex shipping. Massdrop you are disrespecting your customers. You need to offer shipping upgrades. I’m not sure how you got into to bed so deeply with them, but I’m rethinking any further purchases because of it.
Fed Ex and Massdrop combine to use a “partnership” with USPS for shipping. It is a very low priority item for Fed Ex. Mine took about 10 days to arrive in the continental US. I’d be happy if one could pay extra to determine the carrier.
The pen, though, is a beauty, a delight. Worth the wait.
peacemanmikeI also had bad experiences with FedEx shipping. Twice now my purchases from Drop was "delivered" from FedEx and never showed up in my mailbox and outside my door. Luckily Drop gave me refunds, but I am reluctance to buy again.
