Interesting: A Steinhart wannabe, Steinhart divers being Rolex wannabees... it's a wannabee wannabee! :p
Grovana was the OEM for Steinhart previously.
Really? Interesting, could explain the similarity in looks. Steinhart gained a lot of recognition lately, many not even being offended by the "hommage" aspect of their watches given their incredible vfm and quality for the price. I wonder if the same can be said about Grovana? Not that I'm interested in this drop, by principle I don't go hommage, particularly on divers where there are fantastic affordable original designs from Seiko, Orient or Citizen (or even Hamilton recently...) but out of curiosity just...
A cryptic thread that seems to imply that Steinhart is a label/brand of Grovana, but the link they are talking about is frustratingly dead:
Also, from other threads (Google for the URLs):
"from what I understand the Swiss watchmaker used by Steinhart is Grovana"
"I am not sure if Grovana is still making the watches for Steinhart , as I think they might be using another factory"
"I have never owned a Steinhart but my Grovana is very well made, I'd give it the edge over CW. Ok it's a Revue Thommen, but that's just the badge, the RT name has been licensed to Grovana since 2001."
"There have been several reports on other fora that Grovana/Revue Thomen make watches for Steinhart. As far as I can determine from the reports it is just a business realtionship."
"Steinhart and Debaufre have the Ocean in a 39mm, Grovana has the Coral Reef, and Roberts the Poseidon 39mm. Is there any difference AT ALL in the watches themselves other than the name on the dial?"
"Although Steinhart does not manufacture watches or watch parts at their premises in Augsburg, Germany, Steinhart also does not orde watches, or even parts from a catalog of a watch/private label brand producer either. This is how things work in regards to Steinhart Timepieces: It's all about the design. Every single part of a Steinhart watch except the basic movement, is designed and illustrated individually by me exclusively for Steinhart and then commissioned to different companies that will produce these parts according to the design and specification, also exclusively. There are at least 12 different suppliers producing these parts for Steinhart. All these parts and the movements are being sent to Steinhart's partner firm in Switzerland, who assembles the watch heads. This firm does not produce any parts. All they do, is assemble the watches and control their own work before sending the watch heads to Steinhart in Augsburg. Here a second, extensive quality control takes place by one of three master watchmakers, who are also responsible for servicing. The watches that pass the QC then receive their strap, buckle, hang tag, etc and are put in their box before they get shipped to you, the customer."
"Only important thing to know is, that Steinhart is no longer connected to Robert and Debaufre and does not order from Grovana nor any other PLB supplier anymore!"
"Nevertheless, there still seems to be some secret part of history between Steinhart, Debaufre and Grovana, that we will probably never uncover, as no one seems to be willing speak about it... I dont want to stick my nose in it, but it is realy a mystery to me what has happened."
