Intel has discontinued support for the Edison hardware and software (https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/edison) and suppliers have liquidated their inventory. As pointed out elsewhere this kit doesn't include the Edison board you need to make it work. So, if you don't already have Edison boards and familiarity with the software be aware you're going to invest $150+ to get started with something the manufacturer has already discontinued, *if* you can find an Edison somewhere else. If you do have Edison board(s) and are looking to stock up on compatible add-ons while they are available this might be a good opportunity -- depending on what you think of the kit price. (Perhaps that's what Massdrop has in mind -- helping people with Edisons gear up before they're extinct commercially, but it would have been good to have pointed out Intel's dropping manufacturing and support in the item description this time around.)

Despite an edison and breakout board being in almost all the photos it looks like you will have to buy the $100 board + breakout board combo separately

FYI for anyone considering just getting started with the Edison: Intel is pulling the plug on that and a couple other small form factor systems: http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2017/06/intels-has-cancelled-three-raspberry-pi-competitors/

So could I use this to say make a terrarium or crop monitoring system locally and then be able to control this remotely?
As in can this system say email me when humidity falls below value x and then could I send a cmd remotely turning the misting system on? Or control heat/light sources?
Assuming im willing to program it of course, wouldnt expect it to do it on its own lol

Does anyone have any experience with the Edison? I have seen them Microcenter, but I thought that they were simply x86 Arduino controllers. Are they standalone computers like a pie, or more like Arduino? I know they take the Arduino stuff, but I am curious if anyone has made anything with one of these.

SkipPeDon't quote me, but as far as I understand, they're kind of somewhere in between. I don't think they're capable of serving as general purpose computers the way a Pi can, but much more powerful than Arduino. I believe they're designed for much more advanced IoT prototyping for industry, whereas I'm pretty sure Arduinos are aimed squarely at makers and DIY enthusiasts.
I could be totally wrong, but this is the impression I got when I took a look at them hoping they could be used like a Pi to create a tiny, neat PC. Hopefully someone who knows for sure can chip in!

Maitayour right. its more of an Arduino than a pi. they have built in wifi/bluetooth and are able of running simple web servers. also Intel never really supported it well and has now disconnected it.

But what is it?

CloudForestIt's a set of sensors and appropriate equipment to allow an Intel Edison to monitor most of the things we use to describe an environment (temp, humidity, all that jazz) and in turn allow you to use it to automatically do things, like water a plant more or less, send data to a device with an appropriate app, that sort of stuff. That's the limit of my knowledge; hope that helps at least a little!
