So I played with the DAC-X12. It's a very well implemented SABRE design, it didn't have the harshness I expected with the HD 800.
My favorite pairing was with the TH-900. I normally dig the bass, lush vocals, and "open" soundstage the headphone provides, and the DAC-X12 seems to bring out these traits to the max.

Danny_LiuThat picture you posted is not the X12 DAC, it's the H10 amp. Is that to imply it's going to drop again soon?
And there's a new X20 DAC coming out very soon, with dual mono Sabre chips. Do you think that might make an appearance on Massdrop?

AnonymouseIf you look at the actual photo and not just the limited thumbnail you'll see X12 under the H10.

Danny_LiuHi Danny: I bought the SMSL M8 from massdrop and found it fantastic. I am also interested in this drop as it uses a "better" version of the ES9018. Have you compared the 2 or in other words, does the Gustard sound "better?" Thanks for any reply. Vince

Danny_LiuWell, I had to join the drop....I will let everyone know how this sounds to the SMSL M8 which is already extremely good. It's not up to vinyl or RTR in SQ but no clicks, pops, or hiss.

GiuliannoI am not on Head-fi....just a long time semi audio geek.....mainly old tube amps, horn speakers, analog, getting into dacs and headphones due to space problems. I have been very impressed with the cheap ES9018 chip dacs.

tsotjbnIt's the where the tech gears are moving these days, I myself don't see the point in a full ATX PC build when an ITX PC build can be just as powerful but 1/3 the size.

GiuliannoYes, smaller PC's have their place but I still like a large screen....as I am older, I need hard drive space for family photos so larger PC's are fine for me. As for speakers, I still like 15 inch woofers so Altec Nineteen's, and 604's are hard to beat. Old Stax headphones are still my best but am trying to see if IEM can come close....they are OK but not great yet, I have to sacrifice sound quality for portability.

GiuliannoDefinitely, dude. I had a full atx pc that was so large it didnt fit under my desk (running a brand new i7 920 for timeline reference) and I got so sick of it, I sold it and built an even more powerful PC in a mATX case. Now I am thinking my next build will be mITX, since I am still only using one expansion slot for a graphics card. I used to use a sound card, but now I just use a USB DAC and love it.

tsotjbnYeah, the screen is the monitor, and does not relate to the size of your PC. My PC is fairy small (8 x 10 x 10 inches) but I have a 30 inch monitor and 1TB of storage... with room for many, many more TB of storage if I needed it.
I assume you don't have the Altec Nineteens sitting on your desk in your office? lol those things are huge!

SkoobsNo....Altec Nineteens are at home for the side channel, Altec 604C drivers for the mid channel, and JBL L300 in case I want to try something different [img:speakers.awt.jpg] . The Altec 604G's at the office but definitely not on the desk. I like tube amps so these large speakers sound good with low power. The Gustard btw sound very natural, not quite as much separation and clarity as vinyl or reel to reel but definitely getting there....no clicks pops or hiss also.... for ease of use, I am listening 99% with the laptop....LPs and reels are much more troublesome....For their respective prices the Gustard and SMSL m8 are fantastic....
