i was thinking to buy the schitt bifrost then i saw this the dac-x12
is there any comparison between sound signature of this two?
(just did some research and found that i can buy the x12 at a much lower price in hk, at $390 and shipping is not needed..sounds like a very good deal)
read from the head-fi post in the front and saw ppl comparing x12 with gungnir, was very suprised with the price difference
Made in America vs made in China. Building and developing stuff in China is of course a lot cheaper. That however does not mean it's bad quality. Chinese are no way inferior to Americans. Anyone can be good at what they do. It's sad how China is associated with bad quality.
It's because yes, most of the time Chinese made goods are inferior to US made. They even have state supported companies which do _nothing_ but reverse engineer US designed electronics, with hilarious side effects, as not understanding what matters and what doesn't will copy bugs and nonessentials. Hell even my Chinese friends know this and have said so, they buy American when quality matters.
Recently however (past five years) there's been an increase in China companies with decent to good quality goods, especially in Audio. Filling a niche ...
The Schiit Bifrost seems like a very good deal (and truth be told it is one of the best single ended DACs on the market, as it is just a single-ended Gugnir) but the chinese stuff is on a whole 'nother level of $/performance.
If you're down to just this one, I also recommend you look at Audio-GD's NFB-29, as that one uses the same chip as the X12 but comes with a very powerful amp. They're both great DACs, especially for the price.
Chinese companies lately have been pretty good as far as audio goes. Cayin, Audio-GD, Gustard...
It's just finding those companies that use those great factories to make things. I know ZMF Headphones had looked at a couple of US leathersmiths for his new pads, but they were less than satisfactory and changed what materials they were suppose to be using without telling him. The first Chinese factory he found (and he honestly did get lucky here) copied what he wanted exactly, so he's getting everything done cheaper at a higher quality.
But then again, I can't think of any examples outside that small group that does it better than the American equivalents.
The reason for that perception is that Chinese factories are not required by their government to employ as stringent quality control checks and their workers are paid very cheaply for long hours of labor, which can translate into poorer quality control. It does not mean that the product you receive will have issues, just the percentages for cases with defectives due to poor quality control are generally higher for products coming from Chinese factories. All Chinese people know this and luxury brands in China are mostly foreign.
That doesn't mean that the product you get will have poor quality or is inferior. You often can get better performance/specs:value due to their more relaxed laws on quality control and wages.
Well, it all depends on your processes and procedures and what quality control the producer enforces. BMW X5's are produced in Munich, Germany; South Carolina, USA; Kaliningrad, Russia; Cairo, Egypt. They compare very closely the quality of each factory - the amount of mistakes, quality control issues etc. Of course this doesn't happen if you don't run the factory yourself.... My point is: You can produce nearly any kind of quality in China. Except where you need many years of experience -> Like this:
