tom2sprinklersI've been trying to figure that out too. I don't think so. I ordered a pair from amazon to try out before I bought them. They are incredibly comfortable, and quite warm. The yak leather is oddly soft, but there's no goretex lining, and nothing in any of the literature says you should expect waterproofness from these - only that the leather is hydrophobic. (a sprinkling of water on the outside does eventually penetrate the leather, but then evaporates rather quickly. Even if they aren't waterproof, if they dry fast, that's almost just as good
Having never owned a pair, I think they'd be okay in a light rain, but I don't know that I would trust them to go wet-country hiking.
I'd love to get an honest account from someone who has taken a pair hiking in really wet conditions.

kamandiI owned a pair for a long time and loved them for their comfort and style. They really are very comfortable because the yak leather is very supple. http://i.imgur.com/zMOfGTr.jpg
As for waterproofness, they are fairly waterproof once treated properly but it will turn the leather into a much darker shade. A long walk through the forest or the city in the rain is no problem at all.
However, don't use these for hiking in really wet conditions such as a day long hike through tall grass and pouring rain. You will destroy the shoe that way and those are the kind of conditions that gore-tex was designed for.

end because I needed to tighten them quite a bit to fit my fairly narrow feet. This caused the leather after a year or so to come loose on the inside of the nose and made it impossible to use the shoes comfortably. Han Wag was prompt to respond to this however and replaced them with a different pair. I got the Grünten instead (which is basically the same model with regular smooth leather and a bit stiffer) and that one does not have this issue. So my guess is they fixed the original problem. :) http://i.imgur.com/nRlmSXP.jpg

JaccoWThat's great info, Jacco - thanks for the response! After a lot of reading, I may try the lhasa. I need boots for few places but Yosemite, but it can get super wet there, so a Goretex something is probably the right option for me.

JaccoWI, too am having a hard time deciding between this one and the Gruten. I was leaning toward the Gruten but they are not on sale and with this drop the Tashi is 100$ cheaper. Which one do you like better?
