Would love to buy this mic but getting it shipped to New Zealand would bring the total cost $0.22 over the import threshold meaning I would need to pay $100+ more in customs fees :(

The NT1-A is a condenser mic where the Heil PR40 is a dynamic. Two very different types and capabilities of microphone. You can use most any mic for any situation, but there are certainly instruments/sources and environments where particular mics(mic types) excel more than others. See here for some rudimentary differences of condenser and dynamics.

mastershakeCondenser mic's are primarily something you want to invest into if you have the proper space for it, i.e. sound treated rooms or booths and what not. The reason for that is because condensers pick up EVERYTHING, which is what they are designed for (presence) The advantage of having a more high end dynamic mic however is that its designed so that for rooms that aren't treated, you dont hear everything around just what you put in front of it. Both have their disadvantages, you just have to decide whats best for your situation.

Can anyone offer up a comparison between this and the NT1-A?

Anyone have thoughts about the Heil PR40 at this price vs the Shure SM7B?

djfluffkinsThey are both in the same class of quality. Unless you want to wait for a drop for the Shure sm7, this mic is a great buy at its price. It also requires a lot less gain that the sm7 does. I am literally buying this when I get home from work today xD

djfluffkinsThe similarities are that they're both dynamic mics that have some condenser like detail and extended low end response. Both are seen to be be well suited suited for vocals, kick drums and guitar/bass cabs. The SM7 is going to have less high end and is very preamp dependent as it needs a lot of gain. The pr40 doesn't require as much gain and has more high end. The SM7 is probably the more iconic and widely used of the two. However, the pr40 is supposed to be extremely similar to the electro voice RE20, another widely loved mic that is used for similar applications.

Great mic and great price! I have a PR31 (same as the PR30) and it is excellent. Would love to see one of those offered in the future.

KephyrI have a Heil PR30 too, amazing sound. Let's just say I paid more than Massdrop's price on the PR40 for it and it was worth every penny.

DittoboxThanks, all. I'm sure I can't go wrong either way, but I'm leaning towards the PR30.
