I just received mine in black. Super heavy, thick leather sole would probably withstand IED blast. These will take some time to break in. But I love these shoes, they represent OLD SCHOOL craftsmanship. None of this pre-molded Vibram rubber soles found on most buck oxfords. The beauty of these shoes is in the simplicity of the design.
I have never owned a pair of Helm Boots before, nor had I heard of the company prior to seeing this drop. But I must say that I am very pleased with this product, so far as first impressions go. Shoes were delivered relatively quickly, so far as Massdrop ordering goes, so I like the fact that Helm had these at the ready, prepared to ship.
The embossed imprint on the inside sole [see photo]:
"Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right or better."
I cannot make out the name or initials of the attribution, but I presume it is the company's founder. I like it.

I ordered Size 11, and they fit my 10 1/2 foot just fine, including my orthotic inserts. This is the size I normally order in most shoes--dress or athletic--that I purchase. To the guy below who had problems fitting his waterskis into the opening: Get a shoehorn.

dpj1Day 2: I wore these shoes for half the day yesterday, and I have to say, they are extremely uncomfortable. I am HOPING they will be more comfortable once they break in. The question becomes, will I be able to stand wearing them long enough to break them in? The tongue of the shoe is sewn into the right shoe in such a way that the seam bulges downwards onto the top of my foot. Not only is that bulging seam extremely uncomfortable, it actually cuts off my circulation, and causes my right foot to fall asleep. This was just while I was sitting at my desk! Not even walking around! I have a similar problem with a hand-made pair of heavy leather oxfords made by Tricker's, a British shoemaker. Untying it did not relieve the pressure.
Like I said, the shoes are beautiful. It has been said that style sometimes has a price. If true, then owning these shoes may be the death penalty.
