Hey @jfourc and @john9317. @ArgyBargy is spot on. Hertling does not use vanity sizing in waist measurement. Whereas brands like J Crew or Bonobos often fit 1-2" larger than labeled, Hertling (and many other premium trousers) fit true to size.
@john9317, to your point, the size on the label references natural waist measurement, near the navel. As most trousers are meant to be worn below the natural waist, the actual garment has a wider opening to account for widening near the hips. Using natural waist for sizing allows all of your pants to have the same size label regardless of rise (lower rises having wider garment waists).

I'd love to join this drop but the sizing is difficult. Can anybody compare the Garda fit to other makes and models such as the J Crew Bowery pants? Also, I'm a little skeptical that the waist is really TTS as most are not. In fact I have a pair of Hertling wool trousers in size 34 that actually measure 35. Can anybody confirm the waist size is in fact TTS?

mph234Hertling uses true rise measurements (outseam minus inseam) instead of separating out front and back rises. The Garda's measures 9 1/2".

I have another quick question about sizing. I know the description says true to size, but I just wanted to double check since I don't think I can return the pants if it doesn't fit. I'm usually a size 32" in almost every pant in vanity sizing, but with a waist of 34" - should I order the 34" pant or the 32" pant? Thanks again!

jfourcJFourc, I can't say anything for a fact with this Garda model, but Hertling is known to use very little vanity sizing. I have two pairs of their pants—one for JPress and another for O'Connells—and the waist measures very close to the marked size, with maybe a touch of extra room. I wear a 33 in Levis, a 34 in Lands End, and a 35 in my two pairs of Hertling. Also, those Hertling 35s are snug so that I wouldn't need a belt to keep them up. So, unless we hear that there is vanity sizing on these pants, I'd say you should atleast get size 33, if not 34. The other consideration is you can get them altered, but being cotton, letting-out might leave marks whereas taking-in is safer.
