WormboyIn my experience, decent audio quality is the equivalent of decent fast food meals. But in every hobby, just like with food, good and excellent are more desirable.
WormboyForgive me if my answer is too long.
It helps to have something dedicated to just playing music because it helps save battery life on your phone (hi-res music players don't have to be charged once every day or once every two days). Most often, they can also power some beefier headphones, giving you more volume, should you require any (gentle reminder: don't listen to music on super high volumes).
From my experience carrying a Sony hi-res Walkman, it's nice to forget about your phone for a bit and focus on the music. My Walkman has a built-in FM radio as well, which is nice, and it easily compensates for my phone's lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack.
I don't expect much from something like this HiFiMan MegaMini but it covers the basics: decent audio quality, ease of use, and portability. All things that smartphones can do, but it's nice to have something dedicated to just playing music with a beefy battery life.
Hope this helps.
Muser1994So true. In my experience, having a dedicated portable audio player seems to provide a more detached, more enjoyable musical experience. It's one more thing to carry, but for me, I seem to have a better time when untethered from my phone.
