The only thing I didn't realize when ordering this is the water droplets are actually a part of the handle design and not just there to look pretty in the pictures. Besides that though it's a fun sharp knife.
To be clear, its true that the only “legitimate” Higo no kami are ones made by Nagao, the last living family to make em. But it is a widely copied design over the last 100 years, even by some custom makers. So while these may not be the official Nagao Higo no Kami, they are not “counterfeit” if you get my meaning
Blender345I agree. Getting into these knives is a big subject, and beyond the scope of massdrop so far.
Maybe if they one day bring out a drop with a properly researched discussion of real vs fake - that'd be worth getting behind.
TigermanThat'd be nice, but never going to happen with any official MD involvement so long as they aren't willing to reveal their source for the specific ones they're reselling.
Best we could do is start a general discussion thread (not as a discussion in a drop) and gather all the research we've done so far into one spot. But that will only let users know what to look for, won't necessarily change anything in the drops themselves
