This is a much nicer belt than the unfinished harness leather belt that sold on the last belt drop. The dye is much more even and deep and the edges are beveled and dyed too. Latigo leather will hold up for almost a lifetime for most wearers and holds its shape. It's not as heavy duty as harness leather which is more suitable for gun and work belts which may need to bear a heavy load without losing shape or sagging. But there are some drawbacks. One is that this belt doesn't come with keeper to secure the excess length after securing the belt with the buckle. You'll have to depend on belt loops for that. The other is that the buckle looks to be secured with rivets rather than Chicago screws. That means you can't change up buckles. Lastly, this one ain't cheap. In fact, the retail price is absurd and way out of line. You can find belts made of the same quality as this one on eBay for one hell of a lot less money than even being sold here. Same thickness, same weight, same dye process, same attention to detail. Some of them will even come with a keeper and the buckle will be secured with Chicago screws. Maybe not always available there but usually to be found there.
HollowsLeatherThe use of Chicago screws is not only a good practice but also a buyer friendly feature. Some people do actually swap out buckles to suit their apparel. Maybe going from brace to a steal buckle. A keeper is a matter of taste. But most belts both commercially produced and custom handmade do include one. In fact, I can't think of belt even using a roller buckle that didn't have one. They're to my preference but obviously other wearers see it differently.
INTELLIGENDAThanks for pointing out the lack of a keeper loop...I didn't notice that and would have bought one if you didn't point this out. I just don't buy that "center-bar buckles do not require a keeper loop." This belt looks perfect in every other way, but I think the excess piece will look sloppy without a keeper. Looking at all my other leather belts, I see that the keeper really keeps the excess length held in place tighter than any pants belt loops would ever do.
ArgyBargyI agree with your conclusions. Without a keeper, you would be dependent upon the placement of belt loops per brand of your pants. That might not always work out so well. This is such a well finished belt otherwise that it's too bad they didn't offer an option on the keeper.
