I've had dozens of printers over the years. I've chased the technology through inkjet and laser trying to find that balance between fast and quality. I've turned to small business print centers, which cost up to $1000 dollars to handle the load, but I've had trouble with parts wearing out, most recently from a Brother MFC line, a color laser.
The Brother was serviceable, you could replace many of the parts (a huge selling point because you can service it yourself), but each part cost about $100 dollars, and each color laser toner was around $100 dollars (and you need 4 of them!) and if the roller had a single imperfection, you would get a repeating dot on every page the printer created. Eventually I looked for a different solution, and I will explain where I landed.
If I'm going to invest a lot of money for another premium printer, which I did last year, it needs to be fast, multi-function (copier, scanner, and fax), and reliable. I found the answer in the PageWide HP line, and I won't be going back.
The printer blasts out 40ppm (let that sink in for a moment). The toner cartridge is the entire print head, there are no moving parts, other than the paper feed (let that sink in, too). It is an inkjet, which I'd sworn off because of clogging, but this printer has a self-cleaning system that has so far alleviated the issue. All of the colors are contained in a single cartridge. The cartridges are expensive, but I still haven't gone through the first one.
If you are considering a printer in this price range, I would seriously recommend looking at the PageWide line. For speed, quality and reliability, I would not choose any other printer going forward. This is not a paid promotion, this is a frustrated user sharing a product that finally hit the mark. Massdrop should offer this product.

Amazon: $490 Newegg: $750 Officemax: $650 CDW: $570
Prices seem all over the board. Not that I ever plan to buy a printer, but as far as I can tell this is actually a rare good deal from Massdrop, if you're into owning a printer.

If I recall, it was in the $375 neighborhood, but that's an off-the-cuff memory.

Once again, same as last time an HP printer was offered; please drop a Brother color laser all in one. Brother is very reliable and does not have the shiesty business practices that HP does.
