Hi, does anyone know how to wash this without having it sheink too much? If shrinking is inevitable, how much can I expect this to shrink when I wash it?

BountifulI was researching this item and found this webpage - https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/81602/ . Does seem like merino wool shrinks too much

BountifulHi Bountiful- I have a closet full of Icebreaker and it does not shrink, as long as you don't put it in the dryer. You can machine wash, in cold water, using regular liquid or powder detergent and hang dry or dry flat. It is super easy care and you'll never spend money to dry it. That's one of the benefits of Icebreaker, because you're not drying it, it will last years. I have one that it 12 years old, washed probably over 100 times, and it still looks brand new. If you do get a little tiny bit of shrinkage, as some do, it would be in the low single digits say 2%-3% in length, hardly enough for you to notice.

redchiliWhat's the sizing like...? I usually wear L but the chest size (see table) puts me in XL with this shirt.

AnentSome folks think Icebreaker runs on the smaller side, if the size chart says XL, I'd go with the XL.

redchiliThanks. Seems the cut isn't too tight (though XL seems safe): https://www.icebreaker.com/en/mens-tops/realfleece-mt-elliot-long-sleeve-zip/103453.html Model: Height: 5'9" / 180cm. Waist: 32" / 82cm. He is wearing size Medium.

BountifulMachine wash, regular liquid or powder detergent. Cold water. Gentle cycle. Hang dry or dry flat and absolutely zero shrinkage in my experience. It may shrink like 2-3% but that's not enough to notice. All bets are off if you nuke it in a hot dryer. Some dry their Icebreaker all the time with no undesired effects, but it is not recommended, nor suggested by the manufacturer for maximum garment lifespan and enjoyment. A premium quality garment such as this will last 10-15 years if proper care instructions are followed.

BountifulAs with all wool garments, especially Merino, make sure all zippers are up, wash cold/delicate with a mild wool detergent (I use Woolite dark), avoid washing it with any abrasive items, do not use fabric softeners or conditioners. Hang/line dry lighter items in the shade, flat dry heavy/knits. Iron low through a protective layer. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY EVER. The heat will very quickly destroy the fabric.
Fortunately most modern IB items are blended with Nylon, so they are not overly delicate, but i still recommend following the standard wool wash rules just to be on the safe side. Would suck bad to pull your new $200 MSRP sweater out of the wash and find it a perfect form fitted thermal layer for your Chihuahua.
