I understand the handle is made of stainless steel. Can someone enlighten me about the material of which the head is made of?

KartIt's stainless steel with what seems like DLC coating.

KartThe head of this razor is also stainless steel, and this version has a black "Diamond Like Coating" applied to it that allegedly helps offer a smoother shave, though I would take that claim with a grain of salt.

KartI'm not sure the head is DLC-coated. I have a DLC-coated Weber razor and that looks much more matte to me. To me this appears to be the Teflon coated stainless head. See http://ikonrazors.com/shop/ikon-razors/ikon-oss-cerakote/. Maybe Massdrop can confirm.

whackook. Is there a possibility of this Teflon coating to chip off. The last thing I want to happen is to look for another head after dropping a $110 bill on this one.
If MD can give us the option to choose a steel un-coated head with the same combination of comb, it is the best deal for most of us I guess.

KartThere is no coating that wouldn't chip off or wear out.
Comparable example would be teflon coated pans. Cookwares have even more reason for coatings to stick due to health reasons, but see how those turned out.
edit: also for those who are interested, bullgoose shaving has 20% discount on ikons till the 5th, use code " ikon "
just a recent customer of theirs and got this email, figured some would like the discount

KartThe coating on this isn't Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) it is Diamond-like Carbon most likely 'tetrahedral amorphous carbon' as that is the most common form. It is harder than Teflon, slicker a more durable. Having said that, yes it can still chip or flake off if you drop the razor or knock it against something hard.

whackoEarlier in the thread IanAnderson stated that the vendor had confirmed that this particular razor head was in fact Teflon and not DLC.

whacko@whacko first time shaver with a DE razor here. have been using disposable cartridges for the past 15+ years. I was on the lookout for a reliable long lasting razor and previously stumbled upon the Standard Aluminium razor and you helped me a lot on that drop with my questions and I decided not to go ahead with that one. I bought this one and yesterday had my first DE razor shave.
I could not be more happy, though I started shaving with high caution, by the end of first pass, got the knack of it. The handle is quite heavy (my palms had always used disposable razor handles only) and nice on our palms(my palm is a bit big), felt like a little paper weight but perfect for the shave. as everyone pointed out, this is a middle of the road razor in terms of aggressiveness and I felt the SuperMax blade was a bit let down for me. I am planning to try Wilkinson Sword based on a friend's suggestion. High quality razor handle, though saw some discoloration on the blade holders today morning (maybe due to soap? though I cleaned with gushing water after the shave, will have to investigate)
A satisfied customer finally and an end to my quest for a DE razor, hopefully. Thanks MD and iKon and my dear friend @whacko

KartWilkinson is not that great, in my opinion. Try Astra or blue Gillette (Russian) with this razor or better yet, buy a sample pack of different blades.

semkaI was planning to try a sampler blade set; then checked if any of the sampler set has Wilkinson. I believe I have to try a couple of blades before deciding. Thank you for chiming in.

KartGlad to have helped you. If you want to try a variety of blades inexpensively take a look at www.tryablade.com they allow you to buy individual blades from a ton of different brands inexpensively.
If your razor is getting dirty, try cleaning it with some dish soap and a spare toothbrush. This will remove soap scum buildup easily.
