Balanced Armature IEMs

New from InEars Audio, the Zen 2 and Zen 4 are the culmination of design and technology from three industry leaders. The Zen 2 uses two balanced armature drivers (one low/mid and one high), while the Zen 4 is built with four balanced armatures (two low, one mid, and one high). Both feature the company’s ADEL technology for an extended frequency response and a pure, enjoyable sound. The 3D-printed acrylic shells have a universal fit and come with a selection of replaceable tips to ensure a comfortable, personalized fit.

Note: At checkout, choose the Zen 2 (base price) or the Zen 4 (+ $170) in black or white.

The Reviews Are In

In a five-star Head-Fi review, faithguy19 says, “The Zen 2 is once again the more neutral of the two earphones. Perceived clarity is most definitely greater on the Zen 2, but that could easily be due to its increased brightness. If the Zen 4 is neutral leaning toward warm, I would describe the Zen 2 as bright leaning toward neutral.” BulldogXTRM adds, “Simply put, if you can get past the ‘more drivers is better’ hang-up, then InEarz could double the price of these and they would still outperform or be on par with that price point. The Zen 2 is an outstanding value and would do well for an everyday wear IEM or for someone just starting out in the hi-fi audiophile realm.”

I've spent some time with the Zen 2 and holy cow... Clarity, for a 2-driver IEM, is off the charts. Build, accessories, comfort, and sound is excellent. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about these. For $300, it's easy to recommend them. There are only 2 caveats that I've found with the sound: There is some minor sibilance with certain songs. I can't stress the minor part enough. It's not an issue for me but if you're especially treble sensitive then it's something to consider. Treble extension isn't the best I've heard but it's still very good for a 2-driver IEM. BA bass. With simple music, like many pop songs, the sound is on the warm side of neutral. With busier music, the bass starts to disappear into the background and the sound becomes more neutral. This is an issue with every 1-2 driver BA IEM I've ever heard. The issue starts to fix itself when there are 3 or more drivers. Still, this is also a fairly minor issue and it doesn't exhibit itself as dramatically as other good 2-driver implementations such as in the Jays Q-Jays ($300 USD). Also, bass extension isn't the best. It's good, but not great. The bass, while nice in quantity, has very little impact. This is another thing BA drivers tend to struggle with. For example, the Zen 2 sounds warm with: Swim - Fickle Friends Hold Steady - Kacey Johansing The Mother We Share - CHVRCHES I O U - You Me At Six The bass and lower midrange start to deplete, making the tonal balance more of a neutral with busier tracks like: Boston - Augustana Come On - Green River Ordinance Not the American Average - Asking Alexandria The Way of the Fist - Five Finger Death Punch Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance Disease - Beartooth
