I'm new to mechanical keyboards, switching from a squishy non-programmable Kinesis Freestyle.
My question is about key caps... can I mix-and-match the 'common' keys from the current backlit Vortex drop (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/vortex-backlit-doubleshot-pbt-keycaps) and the Granite Ergodoxian to fill in the blanks? Or is that just wrong on too many levels?

bendrexlNobody can stop you from doing this, of course! I think most wouldn't mix-and-match profiles due to aesthetics, but you'd be fine typing since all the common keys are the right profile rows. Of course you're looking at black or white vs gray (and red/blue). You also run into the issue that the default map has ctrl, alt, and fn2 on 1u keys which you won't have. The 1.25u Vortex modifiers also leave a gap on the outermost 1.5u spots in this Ergodox.
Honestly you should be fine doing so, just be aware that your modifier keys from Granite would be shorter than your common set from Vortex, and just ErgoDoxian may not be enough keys to accurately fit the whole board - for most uses where you want legends on the keys I'd suggest one of the Pro Modifiers sets as well.
