Well, here's my finished build - still waiting on a few keycaps to replace the misc thumb pad placeholders, but you get the idea :)
Thanks to everyone's tips in the thread too, they all helped a lot. I installed SIP sockets as many suggested, so should the layout change, I can keep the colour coding without any soldering, just pull one LED out, and insert another :)

I'll be putting a Hakko soldering iron onto ebay in the next day or so as I only bought it for this project and wanted to use a good one. (It was definitely worth it). As well as magnifying glass, and other accessories.

dragon788Thanks, I'm really happy with the way it's all turned out! I bought them here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/ducky-filco-ABS-keycaps-double-color-injection-backlighting-through-shine-through-keycap-mechanical-keyboard-87-keycool/32376810050.html They are very cheap, but being doubleshot I think they should last. I've had ducky shine keycaps too, but they were white so it allowed too much light through (you can see them above in the picture on the older ergodox). Comparatively the Ducky Shines felt like they were lighter and crisper to type on, better quality plastic I think. But for the $23 USD, who can argue :) That however only takes about 2/3 of the way, as I also bought about 15 custom backlit keycaps (from maxkeyboard.com) (not all of them are in the picture) for things like shift, caps lock, the L1+ and L1~ layer keys etc. Of course you can substitute them for any misc left over keys (since you get 108 keys caps and you only need 76). It works fine if you don't mind the incorrect labels. Or you can get blanks from something like pimpmykeyboard.com or mechanicalkeyboards.com or wasdkeyboards.com
Edit: I'm also waiting for a few of these to arrive to finish off the 80s look neon look, and I love braided cables lol http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1M-2M-3M-Fabric-Braided-Data-Sync-Charging-USB-Cable-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3-N9000/32505045719.html
