Does it translate written notes to text? Follow up, when purchasing, do I pick either the mouse or the pen? Lastly, is the pen better than the mouse?

JaxSYes, the product does recognize text. As you scan the Pen takes the text and inputs the text in to any open application on your PC..i.e. Word, Excel, Notes etc. If you are using a smartphone or tablet  (iOS, Android) the text will go directly into the App provided. The Pen can also translate and read text out loud text in 40 different languages.

I'm really glad others posted the suggestion about reading up on reviews. I think it's important, especially given the # of negative reviews these productive have. The pen review (which is what I'm interested in) is: https://www.amazon.com/IRISPen-Wireless-Digital-Highlighter-Scanner/dp/B014WI5B68
I don't think the price difference between here and Amazon is all that great, and Amazon has a return policy. I'm honestly very tempted to buy this pen on Amazon, because if it works, it'd be really useful for my studies. But, given the incredible amount of negative reviews, I'm concerned to say the least. Still...thinking about getting it, because if it does work reasonably well on the Japanese Text I'm working with, then it'd be really helpful for my studies.

TheDarkTrumpetThe Pen does have a learning curve to it but once you practice scanning a few lines it is easy to use and reliable. Also note that the product is coming with the full version of Readiris Pro 15 OCR software ($99 Value) that Amazon is not offering.

When scanning with the mouse you need to be connected to the PC via Wifi. No on board memory.

Just FYI, Finereader is heads and shoulders better OCR software than this Readiris.

When scanning with the mouse, do you have to be connected to a nearby PC? It would be nice if they mouse had on-board memory to retain the scanned images and then I could transfer them to a PC later on.

cr0n1cI'm not certain, but if I had to guess, I'd say yes you have to be connected to a computer. For that price, I find it very hard to believe that mouse comes with enough on-board memory to hold any scans of significant size.
