Why would I buy this from massdrop when it is 66 bucks with shipping from the manufacturer?
http://www.mrpen.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d193.html
got mine in medium stub directly from mrpens. great juicy/smooth pen, maybe a bit too dramatic for daily writing, but quite a meditative experience when you just lay down words with this pen. the least expensive pen in my favorite pens
Once again cheaper, and faster, to go through the source instead of Massdrop.

For me it would be .30$ cheaper since I live in the U.S. but you bring up a valid point.

awesome pen, it enables me to skip all other pens before buying THE PEN, Pelican M800
Any writing samples of different nibs?
TamPrs
We weren't able to get all the nib sizes for a writing sample, but the Parson's Essential uses a similar nib and is a good indicator of the different sizes/styles available:

FYI, I just purhased the same pen for 51.33 euro ($68.189), directly from mrpen...

Does anybody know what sort of nib is on these? Clearly some sort of #6, from comparing to the bock #6. The website says it's a German nib, so I'm tempted to think it's bock from the look of it.
I ask because when looking for a replacement nib on their website, they only seem to sell the whole section, which are only £10 cheaper than the pen itself...
Anybody know of a cheaper nib that would fit this pen?

Where is my pen
By the way, you should view the video by Stephen brown, provided us by BarryB. He does a thorough review of this great pen.
I bought a burgundy pen on the last offering. The fit and finish is perfect. It's a heavy pen with a brass body, and big shiny cap that screws on. I like to write unposted, so the big heavy cap, doesn't bother me a bit. When it first came, I wasn't too sure if I would like it. The thing is big, but absolutely beautiful. Once I inked it up and started writing, I was hooked. Unposted, and right out of the box, this is the smoothest writing, well balanced steel nibbed pen I have in my collection, including pens with big names and price tags many times higher. It is incredibly smooth, and an absolute dream to write with. The Mr Pen website says that this is a very wet writer. I can confirm that. This pen writes very wet. Once I switched from Levenger Empyrean, to a dryer flowing ink (Montblanc midnight). Once I gave it the ink it wanted, the pen became a super star in my book. No longer the gusher, the ink flow immediately slowed right down, as though it was just waiting for me to give it the right ink. It puts down a very nice, well defined, and easy to control ink line. I bought a meduim nib. If I had to do over again i would go for a fine only because of the healthy ink flow in these pens, and my fondness for some inks that are just too wet to use with this medium nib. The pen is heavy because of its brass lacquered body. But because of the way the thing is balanced, it feels weightless in your hand. If you like a heavier pen you are going to love this guy.
has anyone compared this with Italix Churchman's Prescriptor? Is the smoothness of the nib (hard start or skips) different? And is italic preferred for everyday writing? Thanks.

My pleasure. And in case you haven't already seen it, here is SBREBrown's independent review of the CC:
I have an Italix Churchman's Presriptor, and I love it. It's a big pen and I had my doubts at first sight. After inking it up and putting it to paper I found it very smooth, with a nice steady ink flow not a gusher like the Captains Commission. It's a long pen, with a thicker barrel and section, but it'ssuprisingly, very comfortable to write with. Not heavy at all. I don't post my pens, but this one does post. It has a built in system to connect the cap with the "dumb" end. You just have to push on the cap until you hear the click, then it's on securely. I like this pen a lot, have no problems recommending it.

What kind of nib does this pen have? Solid gold? 14kt? 18kt? steel? gold plated. The material of the nib is most important. Why leave this out?
mainak12
Nibs are steel, for this price you would only find gold nibs from used pens or on some of the Chinese brands. Italix sells gold nibs but on different pen which's around £80.
Dear Awesome Massdrop Team: For this particular order, does "oblique right-handed" refer to a nib that slants to the left (left-foot shaped oblique) for right-handed people, or does it refer to a nib that is slanted to the right (right-foot shaped) for left handed people? Thank you. Sincerely yours, Barry
BarryB
Barrry, I'm not Massdrop team but you can check this link: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref/nibs/primer.htm I posted before you, it explains the nib types and how Oblique is shaped.
IceChant
Thank you, IceChant. Yes, Mr. Binder's work is extremely helpful. For this drop, I'm hoping to confirm whether the nib option of "oblique right-handed" refers to a cut for right-handed persons, or to the slant of the nib.
Like my pen and it is beautifully made. I like to write with the cap posted (i.e, with the cap fitted onto the top of the pen), and the cap is quite heavy, so it throws off the balance. That's an easy fix, I just write with the cap off.
I like this pen and have read good things about both the pen and the Mr. Pen Shop. Just went to the mr pen site. They are selling the pen for $57. Massdrop did this a little while ago with a pelikan. A $20 increase over the same pen month or two before. You guys have got to start taking this seriously. No more do I assume that you have the best price. Its only a $10 difference in price here, but it's the principle and a matter of trust that matters to me. How on earth do you justify a price above what the vendor is selling the item for on their website? Thank you, but, I'll order my pen directly from Mr. Pen.

I've ordered from Mr. Pen (wonderful service) but $70 here and $74 at Mr. Pen plus visa money change fee. I don't see where the $140 msrp comes from.
waltburk
I agree. MD is a great option, but only when you read the fine print and insure that the warranty, price, nib exchange options, and shipping make sense. It's not always a given anymore. I don't' dislike MD, I'm just becoming a smarter shopper...lol... So, now at $66.99 , I joined the drop.
So what Nib would I chose for normal every day writing, filling out forms and signing my name?
iFlip92
IMHO Out of the possible choices the Medium (Non-Italic) is the optimal choice or the Fine Cursive Stub which its round edges will allow you some movement while adding some line variation if that's what you're after.
So far, the best pen in my collection!
I am a relative newbie when it comes to buying fountain pens. Can someone explain the differences in the nib types or direct me to a source where I can get such info? Thanks in advance

You welcome, if you need more help feel free to ask and you could try https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/ for more information and help.
Not sure where MD is getting that MSRP, but on the Mr. Pen website, the Captain's Commission is advertised as £40.83 without VAT, which is roughly $57 USD. Not even close to the $139.99 quoted above and still cheaper than the $66.99 for the cheapest drop price.
You're better off ordering directly from the UK.
Should have posted this a bit ago, but wanted to say for the record that Massdrop sorted out my problem with the wrong pen being sent, and it was done quickly and without any cost to me. In fact they had the vendor ship me a new one before I'd even returned the incorrect one without charging my card (I guess they knew where I lived, in case I didn't send it). New pen arrived as promptly as could be expected given overseas shipping, and was exactly what was originally ordered. I'm quite happy with M's customer service overall even though the initial response was somewhat slow. Thanks Massdrop.

Hey @rajiAnytime! Glad that we can work something out for ya. Thank you for the kind words, I will pass this one on to our CS team. We hope that you enjoy your new Italix :) Cheers!
