Gold-Specked Inks

The oldest name in ink production, J. Herbin was established in 1670 by an enterprising sailor armed with sealing wax formulas from his travels in India. After designing specialty ink formulations for such French luminaries as Louis XIV and Victor Hugo, the company became synonymous with high-quality writing supplies. J. Herbin introduced this collection in 2010 to celebrate its 340th anniversary, and the newest addition, Caroube de Chypre, was just released in summer of 2016.

Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of colors for each bottle in the 3-pack: Bleu Ocean, Caroube de Chypre, Emerald of Chivor, Rouge Hematite, or Stormy Gray.

Caroube de Chypre

A deep, intense brown with light red reflections and a sparkling gold effect, this ink is named for the dried carob pods J. Herbin picked up in Cyprus when sailing the Mediterranean Sea. Harvested for their therapeutic properties, carob pods were known throughout Europe as the “the black gold of Cyprus.” J. Herbin was quite fond of them, and some credit them for his long, healthy life.

All That Glitters

Rouge Hematite, the original ink in the series, has the same shiny, deep-red characteristics as the mineral it is named after. With the most subtle golden shine of the five inks in the line, it can look greenish in certain lighting. On the other hand, Stormy Gray is popular for its almost excessive amount of gold sparkle, and inspired by the many oceans J. Herbin once traveled. Originally, Bleu Ocean contained no additional metallic pigment, but offered a nice blue shade with a good amount of shading. Due to popular demand, Bleu Ocean now contains the same gold pigmentation found in the other 1670 colors.

Message in a Bottle

Every element of the presentation tells part of the company's story—from the illustrations on the display box depicting J. Herbin’s nautical life, to the colors of ink inside. The cap on top and seal on the front of the bottle, handmade with J. Herbin Supple Wax, are reminiscent of the wax used by J. Herbin to seal French Grand Cru wines. Please note that the ink takes longer than most to dry and requires more scrubbing to remove. It also needs more diligent and regular cleanings in order to prevent clogging in fountain pens. The gold pigment will quickly settle at the bottom of the ink bottle; shake it thoroughly before filling.
