Product Description
The Desk TOP from Jac Zagoory is much larger than most spinning tops. At 2 inches tall and nearly an inch and a half wide, it looks more like a paper weight than a top—and it can certainly be used as one with the included base Read More
Hey everyone,
Massdrop was offered the chance to share the prototype of a design with the community, but that wasn't clear to us and we didn't make it clear to the community. We got some good feedback here but it's clear that we jumped the gun on releasing this, so the vendor has asked that we suspend the drop for now and bring it back at some time in the future.
I would encourage members to remember that the spinning things world is pretty new and growing fast. In case it wasn't clear from the description, this is designed to be a desk ornament that is also a top, and something you can keep on your desk that doesn't obviously look like a toy - not the spinning top you buy to hit a new record spin time. Re: aluminum for weight: yes, true...but anything this big made of steel or brass/copper would be prohibitively heavy and expensive.
Thanks for all the comments, hopefully the vendor will come back to us with a final production version soon.
JonasHeinemanGreat response.
And yeah we ain't too bright but aluminum is just so...
Now as a desktop mini-center-piece it wouldn't be so bad even if it was heavy as heck. At least you'll know it can be a paperweight.
Glad to hear we will see this back in a new way. Thank you MD and the designer.
An all aluminum construction is enough to turn me off from any top, but the lack of knurling or a proper grip is what really disappoints me about this top. I suppose the creator was going for a very minimal look and in that regard they've certainly succeeded.
The competition in this area is stiff.
But heck lets face it if you bring a cool and somewhat unique top out here and it will sell.
bring an ordinary allebit large top made from pedestrian aluminum and it's an instant fail.
Just about any point of view should lead you to the fact that aluminum is not a good material for a whole top. Parts of the top yes the whole thing no.
There are way too many available bearings to be using a stainless steel bearing. Come on now. Make this top from copper offer it with a ceramic bearing or a ruby ... maybe more tops would sell. It should be scaled correctly
This top is too large to be a good spinner in copper. This maker needs to do more research.
Great to see more top makers on MD.
Even better, one that comes with a mini stand and can even hold pens.
But sadly, all that positive energy I have is gone when I remember it's made out of aluminum. I don't even crush cans for change anymore. Why use such a cheap, basic, ultralight and no fun metal?
And at this price point I can't even try to justify it.
Let me know when this drops again with more options.
