The Focus Rite seems like overkill for me. I'm not recording music. I just want to connect the speakers to my computer to play music. Any other USB solutions?

BogartI bought one of these bad boys for my 305's and it does a fine job converting the signal from unbalanced to balanced and removing static. this also allows me to adjust the volume of both monitors from a single dial in the front. I don't know if its kosher from an audiophile standpoint but it works for me. http://www.amazon.com/ROLLS-MB15b-Promatch-and-More/dp/B0002IL4B4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1420673945&sr=8-4&keywords=unbalanced+to+balanced+converter i go 1/8th (or audioengine d1) to rca to converter to xlr to monitors

BogartNot sure why u can only connect it via USB, connecting via USB means u will be bypassing ur computer's on-board sound card. That means u will need an external sound card or DAC with USB input. You can get something like the JDS Labs Standalone ODAC https://www.massdrop.com/buy/jds-labs-standalone-odac?s=ODAC or Audioengine D1 https://www.massdrop.com/buy/audioengine-d1?s=audioengine%20d1

BartolomeoThanks. I didn't realize that. The last monitors I had had a built-in DAC. KEF X300As. Traded them in for LS50s which are in my main system. They were more than I needed for computer.
Come to think of it, I have a CENtrance DACPort that isn't busy.

hahaitzchrisInteresting. Do these require a balanced input on the TRS ?

BogartThey only have a balanced input...so if you go from unbalanced (consumer grade 1/8th jack) to balanced you might have a noisy signal...just google unbalanced vs balanced audio... You can go straight from 1/8th if you want

BogartHow do you like the LS50s? They're something I think about buying every few months but never take the plunge.

WillFabulous speakers. They sound almost full range. You may know they were the first product ever to win both Stereophile's Budget Product of the Year and it's overall Product of the Year. (Not that they are "budget priced" in the real world.) And, you lucky bastard, they're now available in gloss white with electric blue drivers.
