I have the 1st gen Flip. It sounds pretty good. The Pulse sounds better, and the Charge is the best of the three. But...in terms of volume vs size while still sounding good, the Flip blows the other two and most, if not all, of the competition out of the water! I mean, when using it outdoors, it's as if I had a much larger old-school boombox! However, due to the algorithm that JBL has employed to combat distortion, you do lose some of the lower end as it gets near max volume. But, seeing as the lower freqs are naturally lacking from a such a small system anyway (the small bass port helps, though) it is a reasonable tradeoff.
The only real downside is the 5-hour battery life. But, personally, most of the time I power it off the AC adapter, and tend to use it on battery for only an hour or two at a time.
