I see these tops and accessories often on here. What is the allure? Why do people spend hundreds on items such as these? Is there a draw or mystique I'm not aware of?

phaentI don't understand it either. What's the difference between a 50$ top and a 1$ one (besides the look)?

phaentApparently so.  Sure, let me drop a C-note on a glass disc that I can spin my equally expensive machined titanium top on.  Sorry, Billie, Daddy doesn't have the money to send you to college ... but would you like to spin my top?!

Usually the difference results in a difference in spin times. A minute or two spinning vs 15 minutes+ spinning. But also materials (aluminium vs brass/copper/tungsten etc with ruby tips). That can get you a wide variety of prices. The allure is in the design, the machining, the materials, the physics, the conversation starter, the distraction and probably a bunch of different things for different people. Some people smoke or drink - I have some spinning tops ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

phaent@l3xm4rk , thanks for the explanation. The appeal to dollar ratio still doesn't jive for me, but I can get why it could for you.

phaentIt's no different than collecting figurines or having seven pens. Some people enjoy spinning tops and make a hobby out of it. As with all hobbies you can spend $20 to get into it or you can spend $2000 on top tier items.
The only difference between tops and whatever your hobbies are is that you're not interested in tops.

RashkhAgreed. I didn't mean to come across if I was demeaning the collecting or use of, if it came out that way.
Instead, I was really just trying to discover if there was something I didn't know about them. For instance, drones entice me immensely, but I was blind to the entire racing side until recently and couldn't figure out why people would want small, fast, lower-rez camera options. But then I found out. I figured it might be the same here and just wondered where that niche market sprung up from.
Thanks for all the answers- @l3xm4rk @Rashkh
