I really want this, but I just can't justify spending 80 dollars on ABS keycaps, especially when my keyboard only costed 70 bucks for one and 120 for the other.
KangTheMadSince lowest price on BaseKit is reached (only not reflected on picture yet), you might just run the experiment of buying just that, so you at least get to know if you like SA profile at all. I only got to warn you though, that if you do, then (a) might be no way back and (b) your wallet will have hard times, since all SA sets are expensive.
KangTheMadAnd if you go that route of just BaseKit, I would highly recommend Deep Dish kit as an add-on. Even if you don't run whole home row with it, you might appreciate them on "ASD" while gaming.
SakisOkay, I might sound like a noob but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about right now. All my keycaps look the same except they have different colors and PBT feels better to me.
SakisWell it also kinda pisses me off that the "base kit" isn't even a base kit. What the hell kind of base kit doesn't include shift? It should AT LEAST cover 60% boards and I feel like 60%/tkl should be the "base kit."
KangTheMadIt was to help offset the cost if you didn't require those keys IE with an ergodox. Most base SA sets start at $75 if you are populating a 60% board and some buyers don't need the extras.
KangTheMadIt's called "Base Kit" because it acts as the _base_ regardless keyboard you own - you always need it.
Then, depending on keyboard you got, you supplement it with appropriate modifiers kit:
- TKL if you're a standard keyboard
- Ergodox
- Planck
Your view of a "base kit" is close to what most set designers choose to implement, so you're not actually wrong on this. However, this time, we got what's usually called a "base kit", split onto two kits. This allows:
1. People not having "standard" keyboards (not having keyboards like yours), not to pay for keys they don't need.
2. People that prefer to mix and match with other sets, to just buy Basekit OR TKL as they find fit.
No need for getting pissed. Combined price of those two kits is descend, if you compare it with other "SA" kits. SA are always more expensive compared to OEM profile keycaps, so it's normal you find it expensive. There's nothing wrong with this kit. If all you're having issues with is price, then you will experience it with all "SA" keycaps.
KangTheMadI was talking based on the assumption you wanted to try something new, but you couldn't justify cost of that new thing, and I realize risk behind buying something for 80 bucks and end up not liking it at all.
If you do not intend trying anything which is not PBT, just ignore this drop and this post.
What I suggested is that in case you still want to give it try, still pay a "sensible amount", you could just buy Basekit only for testing things out. It will set you back for just 25 bucks + shipping (don't mind massdrop saying it's 36, you will be charged for 25 + shipping). You indeed won't get all keys this way, but you get a chance to try ABS SA, so that - next time - know first hand, if an ABS SA set deserves your 80 (or more) bucks.
SA profile is all about a completely different shape of keycap. Moreover, keycaps intended for what's called "Home row" (row on keyboard carrying A,S,D,F,G,H,J,K,L keys) come on "Deep Dish" version, and this one set offers "Deep Dish" version for A,S,D,J,K,L for just another 8 bucks.
Intended usage for "Deep Dish" is aiding those touch typing (those typing without the need to look at the keyboard) to identify "home row" by "feeling" it different on their fingers. Unintended usage is place "Deep Dish" version on A,S,D so you are able to relocate faster when playing certain games.
See this one photo. "F" key is a "Deep Dish".

So, what I suggested is that you pay yourself a lesson (costing 25 + shipping), or pay yourself two lessons (costing 25 + 8 + shipping).
sanriohddI am sure. However, I am NOT massdrop personnel, got no inside information, so I am a stranger on the internetz you shouldn't trust. I know they extended for another day to make sure lowest price gets unlocked, and that they were still missing 20 basekits at the time (9 hours ago).
KangTheMadHmm. Might sound funny, but it all depends on keyboard. Each keyboard model differs from the other and each carries its own "acoustics". To some models one keycap set might sound better than another. Moreover, I usually switch to OEMs on summer and back to SA during Autumn. I am sweating a lot and SA feels more messy during summer (most SA sets are glossy), whereas textured PBT keycaps offer a better grip.
SakisHaha. Did you see I joined the drop in the little side portion? I ended up just getting the whole 60/TKL set. I figured that I lhat after I researched the set a little bit more, SA were indeed more expensive. And I didn't see many I liked as much as this one, besides the deep space and twilight, and so I figured, what the hell, I'll try it out. Worst case scenario if I don't care for these I can always sell them on /r/mechmarket
