People on this website have [different opinions and desires than myself], you don't live in the Matrix[or do you?], you look like [an adventurer] in these sunglasses. Also you dont need a hunting knife you're [having a blast with friends playing] magic the gathering.

SurgicalGod forbid someone actually buys these because the enjoy hiking in snow/deserts. No need to be a condescending asshole, and believe it or not many people here actually participate in the hobbies they buy things for, I can assure you I've gotten plenty of use out of my ka-Bar knife, since you seem to care so much about what everyone here does in their free time.

SurgicalThat's a lot to extrapolate from, "business sells product to consumers who are interested in buying it"

bioshockerlolWrong. This business with a small in-crowd consumer community sells products that industry will provide at a very large discount for bulk orders. There is a reason why many products are here are sold at such a high discount... they don't sell very well in the first place because they are either not a well known brand by consumers (although usually good quality), too expensive at their regular price (ex. audiophile equipment) often a combination of both, or just plain ridiculous. Like these glasses... This website isn't some magical place that tricks capitalistic companies from losing money by selling products at discount it's a tool to promote branding/production.

SurgicalAlright, then I suppose that begs the question: why do you care so much about what gets sold in the ultralight hiking community section? It seems like you're really bent out of shape about either the product itself, the type of customer you perceive buying this product, or both. Are you concerned that this type of consumer in this segment will have a negative impact on the type of products offered in the audiophile community?

bioshockerlolFirst of all the Hiking Community isn't something I would really use as an example since they do have quality clothing and camping gear that has practical uses for those who actually camp and hike. However for a personal reason I trash talk is I think some of the cheese they sell will actually turn away consumers from using this site... the less people using the site and committing to drops the less good deals I will get personally . On the other hand I think the business model is squandered when they have such narrow range on their products, it's no marketing secret that bulk ordering results in lower costs, the more accessible the website is the more people will participate. When people go to the front page and see some silly glasses or some gaming cards and might dismiss the website entirely, the company loses and so do I.

SurgicalIt's funny that you mention that, because I first came to Massdrop for deals on collectible gaming/board gaming supplies, but have spent more time using Maddrop to learn about Ultralight hiking and outdoor equipment. Outdoor Gear Lab and Reddit are only so helpful, and Massdrop has introduced me to some of the vendors I now carry in my personal pack (Klymit, Outdoor Research, Hummingbird, etc.).
That being said, there are certainly drops/communities that make no sense to me personally, but at the same time I understand that there will always be a customer for that product. These glasses might be a great pick up for a desert hiker looking to keep sand/particulates out of their eyes with the added benefit of sun protection, while others might grab them as a fashion statement. I personally have no interest, but as of this post they've already hit their minimum buy size for lowest price (so someone wants em'!).
Anyway, I guess my primary point of confusion was your vitriol surrounding the product. I understand if your thought process is that the choice of some drops turns away customers or degrades the Massdrop community as a whole. However, my viewpoint is that as long as Massdrop is selling to a niche customer base and maintaining profitability, they will continue to offer products that fit more into the mainstream for that community (and therefore improve the likelihood that I'll buy). Newegg might sell rice cookers, but if it helps them maintain the buying power to offer competitive pricing on consumer electronics via additional profit streams, sell all the rice cookers you want.

SurgicalI have been working as a mountaineering guide on Mt. Shasta since 2008. Every season I see clients wearing these exact glasses. They could be a brand new pair or a hand me down from the client's parents. Either way, these are legit glasses that are still styled after the originals version from decades ago.
Granted, the addition of multiple color options could be misleading, as these have been adopted for other uses (desert, burning man, steampunk, whatever). But that shouldn't detract from what these are: serious sun-blocking lenses with removable side shields and wrap-around ear bands, made in Europe to boot.
And to speak of the bigger picture, other sites might avoid certain products so as not to be seen as silly to the general population, whereas we see as legitimate pursuits for true enthusiasts, whether it is cutting grams off of your rain shell, investing in Magic cards, or sewing a quilt for your grandkids. Silly to you can be meaningful to someone else, and that's one of the things I love about Massdrop. We can all take our passions seriously, without reservation. And passion is contagious.

Alee.GThe ka-Bar you bought (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ka-bar-zombro-knife) is badass. What do you use it for?

SurgicalI can tell you I am happy to see those glasses coming for sales. The first time I saw such glasses was in the 80s, my dad who actually comes from the jura mountain region would always were them for skying. They are really the best you can have when out on the slopes.
