You only need this contraption if you own perpetual calendar. Otherwise why would you want to prematurely wear out your watch mechanism while not wearing it?
dkzzzzNot only the perpentual calendar, also setting a moon phase, or even a basic date without quickset (imagine going 19:00-2:00 TWENTYFIVE times to catch up the date) is PITA. Then there is a whole debate about some ETA autos being susceptible to handwinding, so letting the watch run on a winder may do less wear than giving it a few starting handwind turns every few days... But yes, generally not needed for "normal" watch with quickset date.

dkzzzzHow about how most people will wear out the threads on their crown and barrel long before this accelerates the service interval on their movement... I’m not going to buy one because I don’t know the brand (rather spring for a wolf next time it comes around), but if you’re like me and own multiple divers, just unscrewing and re-screwing the crown to set the watch all the time is enough reason to think about a winder. Even with really hard steel, threads will easily wear out which is why crown and tube are typical service replacements
