When I saw the price, I thought it seemed pretty average for this particular Becker model. Upon searching, I found it was a couple of bucks above the average one can get it for if they do a little shopping. Took me two site-searches before I found it for $77.99 with free shipping and you don't have to wait almost a month before it even ships.
If none of that matters to y'all, I'm here to tell you that the BK7 is not over-hyped in the description for this drop. It's not the "beast" that the BK9 or BK21 are, but it's a much better slicer than either of them, making it great for food prep, trap making, and lighter duty bush-craft tasks. Maybe saying it's well-suited for "hefty chops" is a bit over-hyped, but it will serve as a chopper for smaller diameter limbs and branches - it just has nowhere near the chopper potential as the BK9, BK21 or even the BK4. 1095 Cro-Van is not stainless steel, so if you plan to use this one in extremely wet and/or salty environments, you will have to pay close attention to keeping the blade oiled, but for anyone who doesn't already have at least one Becker knife, you can't go wrong with 'em. Every one of 'em is designed flawlessly by Ethan Becker, and manufactured, and most importantly, heat-treated, by the #1 knife forge in the US - KA-BAR. The head engineer and overseer of the heat-treat shop at KA-BAR is second to none.

BlueTomI don't think people buy this type of knife for food prep. I own one and can say it's fantastic for heavy use. Sure, it won't beat the BK9 for heavier chores like falling a tree, but it's not obnoxious like the BK9's size. Perfect balance for me. I would never use the same knife I use for camp building than for food pep, that's what the Mora companion is for.

CracktowerI was simply responding to the language used in the description of this drop. They called it a "beast" and said it was suitable for "hefty chops." As an owner of each of the BK7, BK9, BK4 and BK21, the 7 is the least "beastly" and least suitable for "hefty chops" between the four. And it's not I who says the 7 is well-suited for food prep, it's Ethan Becker who's said it dozens of times on Blade Forums in the BK&T sub-forum. He's made videos demonstrating its suitability for food prep. He likely knows how to wash his blade in the field after using it for bushier-craftier tasks so he can use it for food prep at supper-time. Ya think? Don't recall him ever referring to the BK9 as being "obnoxious" either, but to each his own.

BlueTomI said it was obnoxious. Never referenced anyone but myself. I'll take my Companion every single day of the week for food prep, especially cutting thin slices like onion and tomatoes. Hey, if Ethan Becker says it it's law, right? I wouldn't use the same knife that I just hacked a tree with unless it's the ONLY knife I have. Remember, Ethan Becker is trying to SELL you his knife, I'm not. There will come a time where you don't have anything to clean your blade with, in Ethan Becker's perfect world it probably doesn't happen. I own my words and I'm sorry if you think I was attacking you personally, I was only lending my opinion on the matter, just like yourself.

CracktowerAnd I never referenced "law," nor did I make it out to be that the BK7 is only well-suited for food prep. I only referenced the language used in the description of this drop. I certainly never mentioned another brand or completely different design of knife having absolutely nothing to do with this drop. Ethan's opinions, being the designer, carry a bit more weight with me than the description does, or than your opinions do. My personal experience over the last 40+ years of being a user of various brands of large fixed blade knives, also carries more weight than your opinions. The BK7 is a well-made, well-designed knife for which many lines of comparison can be drawn between it and its bigger brothers, but is not comparable at all to a Mora Companion. I spoke very highly of the BK7. Don't have a clue what your beef is. And hey, I never said it wasn't decent at "falling trees" either, just not as well-suited for the task as the bigger Beckers. Here's my BK7 in action if you wish to continue quibbling over nonsense: LOL

BlueTomWay to take someone's words out of context. Remember, only your opinion matters here. Good forbid someone else has an opinion. You must be related to Becker.

BlueTomI can quibble all day, I actually like arguing my point, especially when old men pull out the "because I've been on the earth longer than you my opinion means more than anyone else's" BS.
